Barcelona defeat Lyon to win second consecutive Women's Champions League

Barcelona won the Women's Champions League final 2-0 over Olympique Lyonnais on Saturday, their second consecutive victory in the competition, thanks to goals in the second half from Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas.

Barcelona, who defeated VfL Wolfsburg 3-2 in last year's final, came into the game hoping to improve on their previous losses to French powerhouse Lyon in 2019 and 2022, which were 4-1 and 3-1, respectively.

This time, they finally found the right combination of organisation and individual brilliance to defeat Lyon, the most successful team in the competition's history, in a nail-biting final.

With a large crowd in attendance at Bilbao's San Mames stadium, Barcelona survived an early scare when Lucy Bronze nearly steered the ball into her own net in the 14th minute, but it struck the woodwork and bounced harmlessly.

At the other end, Lyon's Vanessa Gilles had to clear the ball off the line after a saved Mariona Caldentey shot ricocheted towards the goal, and Caroline Graham Hansen came close to scoring as the first half ended 0-0.

Barcelona gradually gained control of the game, and Bonmati, who won the Ballon d'Or and FIFA Best Women's Player award in 2023, broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute with a shot from a tight angle that deflected off Lyon's Gilles and past keeper Christiane Endler.

Lyon brought on Norwegian striker Ada Hegerberg, but the competition's leading goalscorer, who has been plagued by injury for much of the season, was unable to score despite a couple of good chances.

Instead, Putellas, who had been dealing with a persistent knee problem, came off the bench and scored a stoppage-time goal to secure Barcelona's victory.

"We knew we needed to be a club that made history, it's not easy - it's hard to do it once, but to do it back to back? Lyon showed how difficult that is," Barcelona defender Bronze told broadcaster DAZN.

"This team has finally done that, I think we go down in history as one of the best teams in Europe."

The Lyon team was disappointed because they felt they didn't play as well as they usually do in a competition they have won time and time again.

"I'm very emotional, no-one likes to lose a final ... I'm still very proud of my team, We gave it our all, we have some regrets of course, but hopefully next year we're back again," Lyon midfielder Danielle van de Donk said.
