Barcelona, Spain legend Andres Iniesta announces retirement from football

Andres Iniesta, the iconic former Barcelona midfielder and one of football's most decorated players, officially announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday at the age of 40. The Spanish legend leaves behind a legacy that includes nine La Liga titles, four Champions League trophies, and 32 major honors with Barcelona, alongside his World Cup and European Championship triumphs with Spain.
“Being on the pitch is over,” Iniesta said, visibly emotional during a press conference in Barcelona. Reflecting on a career that spanned over two decades, Iniesta added, “I can’t stay away from football; it’s my life and will continue to be my life. Now, I need to continue educating myself—I'm working towards my coaching diploma, and that’s the next step.”
Iniesta's football journey began at Barcelona's famed La Masia academy, where he emerged as a midfield maestro. Making his first-team debut at just 18, he went on to make 674 appearances for the club over 16 years, forming part of a formidable midfield trio with Xavi Hernandez and Sergio Busquets. Their mastery of the "tiki-taka" style revolutionized football, propelling both Barcelona and Spain to unprecedented success.
Iniesta played alongside legends such as Lionel Messi, Neymar, Samuel Eto'o, and Luis Suárez, playing pivotal roles in Barcelona’s treble-winning seasons under Pep Guardiola in 2009 and Luis Enrique in 2015.
His crowning moment came in the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa, where he scored the decisive goal in extra time to give Spain a 1-0 victory over the Netherlands, securing their first-ever World Cup title. Iniesta earned 131 caps for Spain, winning two European Championships in 2008 and 2012 before retiring from international football after the 2018 World Cup.

Following his departure from Barcelona in 2018, Iniesta spent five years playing for Japan’s Vissel Kobe before a final stint with UAE club Emirates.
Looking ahead, Iniesta expressed his desire to return to Barcelona in a different role. “When I can do what I did as a player in another role at the club… I’d be delighted,” he said.
Barcelona paid tribute to their beloved icon, posting on social media: “Iniesta, your football will live on forever.” Fellow legends, including Lionel Messi, praised Iniesta as “one of the most magical teammates,” while Spain coach Luis de la Fuente hailed him as an exemplary professional.
Iniesta's influence on the game, both in Spain and internationally, ensures that his legacy will endure well beyond his playing days.
