Barcelona vs PSG: UCL Preview, Prediction, and Lineups

A blockbuster UEFA Champions League clash is set for Wednesday night as Barcelona welcome reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. With both teams coming off opening-match victories, the stakes are high in what already feels like a tie worthy of a final.

Barcelona: Momentum and firepower

It has been more than a decade since Barcelona last lifted the Champions League trophy, when current PSG boss Luis Enrique guided them to glory. Now, under Hansi Flick, La Blaugrana are determined to reclaim their European dominance.

Their campaign started in style with a 2-1 victory at St. James’ Park against Newcastle United, where Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United — stole the spotlight with a brace. That win marked the second of five consecutive victories across competitions, helping Barça climb back to the top of La Liga after beating Getafe, Real Oviedo, and Real Sociedad.

The Catalan giants are thriving offensively, averaging three goals per game in the league. Their Champions League record at home also inspires confidence: Barcelona have scored at least three goals in six of their last seven UCL fixtures at home.

PSG: Injury-hit champions

Paris Saint-Germain opened their title defense with a ruthless 4-0 win over Atalanta, spreading the goals between Marquinhos, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nuno Mendes, and Gonçalo Ramos. That result followed their emphatic 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in the 2025 final, showing Enrique’s side can still dominate Europe’s biggest stage.

However, PSG’s momentum has been disrupted by injuries and inconsistency. They fell 1-0 to Marseille in Le Classique but bounced back with a 2-0 victory over Auxerre in Ligue 1. The bigger concern lies in their squad fitness, with several stars unavailable for the trip to Catalonia.

Team news

Barcelona will be boosted by the return of teenage sensation and Ballon d’Or runner-up Lamine Yamal, who assisted Robert Lewandowski’s winner against Real Sociedad at the weekend. However, Marc-André ter Stegen, Gavi, Raphinha, Fermin Lopez, and Joan Garcia remain sidelined. Wojciech Szczesny is expected to continue in goal.

PSG, meanwhile, will be without Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, as well as Desire Doué, Marquinhos, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. This leaves Luis Enrique short of attacking creativity, though Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz, and João Neves have all shaken off knocks to travel with the squad.

Probable Barcelona XI: Szczesny; Kounde, Cubarsi, Araujo, Martin; Pedri, De Jong; Yamal, Olmo, Rashford; Lewandowski

Probable PSG XI: Chevalier; Hakimi, Zabarnyi, Pacho, Mendes; Lee, Vitinha, Zaire-Emery; Mbaye, Ramos, Barcola

Head-to-head

The rivalry between Barcelona and PSG has delivered unforgettable moments, none more famous than the “Remontada” of 2017. More recently, PSG have held the upper hand, winning convincingly at Camp Nou in 2021 and again in 2024. Another win in Catalonia would see them become the first side in history to beat Barcelona three straight times at home in European competition.

Prediction

With a packed injury list and missing several key attackers, PSG may struggle to match Barcelona’s firepower. Yamal’s return, combined with Rashford’s form and Lewandowski’s finishing, could tilt the balance toward the home side.

Prediction: Barcelona 2-1 PSG
