Bayer Leverkusen 0-0 Borussia Mochengladbach: Leverkusen spurn numerous chances; held to stalemate

Bayer Leverkusen's undefeated streak in the Bundesliga this season (W15, D4) may persist, however, their recent 0-0 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach has provided Bayern Munich with a slight opportunity.

Following Jurgen Klopp's unexpected announcement yesterday that he will be departing Liverpool at the end of the season, Xabi Alonso, the manager of Leverkusen, was among the early contenders to replace him in the summer.

However, Leverkusen is determined to put the speculation aside and concentrate on their pursuit of the Bundesliga title. They made a strong start to the match and came close to scoring within the first 10 minutes when Nadiem Amiri forced a brilliant save from Moritz Nicolas.

Despite their relentless pressure, Alonso's team struggled to beat Nicolas, as Florian Wirtz discovered in the first half when his close-range shot was saved by the Gladbach goalkeeper.

Die Werkself went into halftime on level terms, with Álex Grimaldo being the latest player to fail in their attempts to score just before the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Leverkusen dominating the game. However, wastefulness continued to plague them, with Jeremie Frimpong and Grimaldo both squandering excellent opportunities within 15 minutes of the restart.

As frustration grew at the BayArena, Leverkusen seemed to be running out of options in the final third. Gladbach defended their 18-yard box with increasing numbers, making it difficult for Alonso's side to break through. In the end, they had to settle for a disappointing draw.

This result opens the door for Bayern to close the gap in the title race when they play tomorrow. With the reigning champions visiting the BayArena in two weeks, Leverkusen is well aware that the landscape of the title race could change significantly in a fortnight's time.
