Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 Bayern Munich: Xabi Alonso's side batter Defending Champions to go five points clear at Bundesliga summit

Bayer Leverkusen asserted their dominance in the Bundesliga title race with a resounding 3-0 victory over reigning champions Bayern Munich at the BayArena. This impressive win not only propelled them five points ahead at the top of the table but also extended their remarkable unbeaten streak to an astonishing 31 matches.

In Bundesliga history, it is unprecedented for two teams to have accumulated at least 50 points at this stage of the season. However, these two dominant teams have set an incredible standard so far in this campaign.

To everyone's surprise, visiting manager Thomas Tuchel made an unexpected decision with his team selection, opting for three centre-backs to match Leverkusen's formation.

Leverkusen, on the other hand, had left Jeremie Frimpong and Jonas Hofmann on the bench, displaying their boldness. The anticipation at the BayArena was intense, but the kick-off was delayed due to supporter protests against the DFL.

The first 10 minutes of the match were cautious, with both teams showing mutual respect. However, it was Leverkusen who suddenly came to life and asserted their dominance. Amine Adli was particularly impressive on the right, twice evading Bayern's defense and testing Manuel Neuer.

On the second occasion when Adli was denied, Bayern's defense momentarily lost focus, and they paid the price as Josip Stanisic, of all players, turned home Robert Andrich's low cross, haunting his parent club.

Bayern's star-studded forward line was ineffective for most of the first half, as the reigning champions struggled to gain a foothold in this crucial clash.

Despite this, Tuchel decided to keep things unchanged personnel-wise heading into the second half. However, Xabi Alonso's men took advantage and doubled their lead within five minutes of the restart.

A classic counter-attack from Leverkusen saw Nathan Tella and Alejandro Grimaldo combine with a simple one-two, allowing the Spaniard to find space and score a powerful shot into the net, leaving Neuer helpless.

Leverkusen, even after moving two goals ahead, continued to push forward and came close to scoring through wing-backs Grimaldo and Frimpong. Grimaldo even struck the crossbar directly from a corner.

In truth, home goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky was rarely tested, and Bayern could have suffered an even worse fate as Frimpong hit the post late in the game

Leverkusen's dominant performance was not an exaggeration, as they continue to distance themselves from their reputation as perpetual runners-up by securing a five-point advantage at the top.

Bayern's long-standing grip on the Meisterschale seems to be genuinely threatened, and the Dutchman played a crucial role in sealing the victory by scoring a third goal in the 95th minute.

His remarkable long-range strike into an unguarded net came after Neuer had ventured forward to join the attack during a corner..
