Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 RB Salzburg: Wirtz stars as hosts cruise to convincing victory

Bayer Leverkusen reinforced their aspirations of advancing to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) for the first time since the 2016/17 season with a decisive 5-0 victory in their opening match against RB Salzburg.
Following a significant defeat to Liverpool, which marked their joint-heaviest UCL loss in over ten years, Leverkusen entered the match with determination, quickly establishing a two-goal lead within the first 15 minutes.
A controversial handball by Samson Baidoo in the penalty area led referee Mikola Balakin to award a penalty, which Florian Wirtz converted skillfully into the right corner.
Shortly thereafter, Alejandro Grimaldo extended the lead by curling a magnificent free-kick into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Alexander Schlager unable to respond.
As the match progressed, Pepijn Lijnders’ team faltered around the half-hour mark.
Wirtz showcased his talent with an impressive solo run, evading several defenders within the box before finding the back of the net.
Leverkusen nearly increased their lead twice before halftime, with Exequiel Palacios missing a close-range shot and later sending a header over the crossbar.
Despite making three substitutions after the break, the Red Bulls found it difficult to generate any momentum. Leverkusen maintained their dominance, intent on preserving their remarkable European home record, which now stands at seven consecutive unbeaten matches at the BayArena.
Patrik Schick eventually found the net, expertly connecting with Jeremie Frimpong’s precise cross from the right to score from close range.
A rapid counterattack then saw Wirtz assist Aleix Garcia, whose powerful shot eluded Schlager's reach.
This defeat signifies Salzburg's third consecutive loss, following a start to their UCL campaign that included three defeats without scoring, despite having recently ended an eight-match winless streak in the Champions League with a victory over Feyenoord.
Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen presents a contrasting narrative, as they have maintained an unbeaten record against Austrian teams across six European encounters.
Werkself has outperformed both Liverpool and Manchester City in terms of goals scored in European competitions since the beginning of the previous season.
Furthermore, they have secured more victories in significant European tournaments than any other club, aside from those in qualifying rounds.
