Bayer Leverkusen 5-0 Werder Bremen: Wirtz hat-trick sees Leverkusen lift maiden Bundesliga title in style

Bayer Leverkusen achieved a historic milestone by clinching their first-ever Bundesliga championship without a single defeat in the first 29 rounds of the season. Their remarkable journey culminated in a resounding 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Sunday, securing the coveted trophy.

Prior to the weekend, Bayer understood that emerging victorious against Werder Bremen would guarantee them the prestigious top-tier title in Germany. There was also a slim possibility of claiming the championship before their match if both Bayern and Stuttgart suffered defeats on Saturday, but unfortunately, they both emerged triumphant.

Astoundingly, Xabi Alonso's exceptional team has yet to taste defeat in the 2023/24 Bundesliga season or any other competition thus far.

With an impressive record of 25 wins, four draws, zero losses, and a goal difference of 74:19, Bayer's league campaign has been nothing short of extraordinary. Regardless of the outcome of the remaining matches, their performance is undeniably deserving of the crown.

For a considerable period, Bayer Leverkusen was often regarded as the perennial runners-up in German football, earning the moniker 'Neverkusen' due to their inability to secure a title.

However, it is now safe to say that the club and their devoted fans are firmly entrenched in a state of euphoria and disbelief.

If their unbeaten streak continues until the end of the season, the focus of the conversation will shift from simply celebrating Bayer's achievement to comparing it with the greatest seasons in Bundesliga history and even the greatest seasons in European club football.

With only five matches remaining, Bayer still has the opportunity to equal or surpass Bayern Munich's records for the highest number of points earned in a single Bundesliga season (91 in 2012/13), the most wins in a season (29, also in 12/13), and the fewest losses (one in both 12/13 and 1986/87).

No team has ever completed a Bundesliga campaign without a single defeat. Additionally, Bayer is also in contention to win both the German Cup and the UEFA Europa League. There is no doubt that we are witnessing one of the exceptional club seasons of the modern era.
