Bayer Leverkusen signs England U21 defender Jarell Quansah from Liverpool

The 22-year-old Quansah has signed a contract that extends until June 2030 and will don the No. 4 shirt previously worn by Tah, as announced by the Bundesliga club on Wednesday.
The reported transfer fee exceeds 30 million euros ($35.3 million) and could rise to 40 million euros ($47 million) with performance-related bonuses, which aligns closely with the amount Liverpool agreed to pay Leverkusen for Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong in May.
Liverpool is said to have secured a buy-back clause for Quansah, valued at over 60 million euros ($70.6 million), after he completes two seasons with Leverkusen.
Additionally, Leverkusen sold their star player Florian Wirtz to Liverpool last month for a record fee in the Bundesliga.
Tah moved to league rival Bayern Munich following the conclusion of the season after opting not to renew his contract. He had been with Leverkusen for a decade and played a crucial role in the team that achieved an unbeaten season in the Bundesliga and German Cup in 2023-24.

Quansah recently celebrated winning the Under-21 European Championship with England. However, he struggled to secure a regular starting position at Liverpool, competing with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté.
“One of the most promising English central defenders. He’s fast, agile, a good footballer,” Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said of Quansah.
“He has already made an impressive impact in a Liverpool defense dominated by world-class players. With Jarell, our defense gains significant dynamism, pace and toughness in tackling, and he’s another very important building block.”
Rolfes is managing significant transformations at Leverkusen following the exit of coach Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid.
Wirtz, Tah, and Frimpong have all departed, and Rolfes has been acquiring promising young talents to compensate for their exits.
Last week, Leverkusen secured the signing of Abdoulaye Faye for a reported fee of 3 million euros ($3.5 million) from the Swedish club BK Häcken, with the 20-year-old Senegalese defender anticipated to be loaned out for the upcoming season.
Earlier, Leverkusen revealed the acquisitions of France youth international Axel Tape on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain’s under-19 squad, 19-year-old Ibrahim Maza from Hertha Berlin, and 21-year-old defender Tim Oermann from relegated Bochum. Oermann was quickly loaned to Austrian champions Sturm Graz for the season.
Leverkusen also brought in Netherlands goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Brentford, while former Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag was appointed as Alonso’s successor.
