Bayern Leverkusen 2-1 Freiburg: Florian Wirtz's wondergoal puts Leverkusen back on top of the Bundesliga.

Florian Wirtz scored a stunning individual goal to help Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen beat Freiburg 2-1 on Sunday.

The first half was dominated by Leverkusen, who gave an early indication of their intentions when Granit Xhaka whipped a long-range drive just wide of the post inside the first minute.

However, that was the closest they got to troubling Noah Atubolu for a while, as a well-drilled Freiburg side sat deep and looked to pounce on the counter.

Wirtz's brilliant dance past a handful of Freiburg players inside the penalty area, twisting and turning before curling a shot inside the far post, thwarted that plan. Edmond Tapsoba headed wide from a corner as the home side went close to extending their lead just before the interval.

The game flowed similarly in the second half, with Wirtz stinging Atubolu's palms with a stinging effort from the edge of the box before Victor Boniface tried a lob from the halfway line that drifted wide.

On the hour mark, Jonas Hofmann added to the score when his drive from the edge of the area struck the post, hit Atubolu, and went in. This forced Freiburg's hand, and Christian Streich's team became more daring in the future, committing more troops to the attack.

They were rewarded for their efforts when Manuel Gulde headed in a teasing Vincenzo Grifo free-kick, but Leverkusen almost immediately hit back, with Wirtz hitting the crossbar again with another long-range drive.

Freiburg pushed for an equalizer in the final few minutes, but Leverkusen held on for their fifth home win in as many Bundesliga games this season.
