Bayern Munich 1-1 Celtic (3-2 agg): Alphonso Davies' late heroics sends Die Roten into Champions League last 16

Bayern Munich secured their place in the Champions League last 16 after Alphonso Davies netted a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer in a tense 1-1 draw against Celtic on Tuesday, sealing a 3-2 aggregate victory. The Bundesliga giants now await either Bayer Leverkusen or Atletico Madrid in the next round, with the draw set for Friday.

Celtic, determined to overturn their first-leg deficit, stunned the Allianz Arena when former Bayern reserve player Nicolas Kuehn fired them into the lead in the 63rd minute. The visitors, seeking their first win in Germany in 16 attempts, pushed Bayern onto the back foot for much of the match and came agonizingly close to forcing extra time.

"If you watched the first leg, I don't think it was surprising," Bayern midfielder Leon Goretzka admitted. "Of course we could have made it easier for ourselves by not conceding a goal."

Celtic’s intent was clear from the start, with Kuehn’s early shot cleared off the line by Raphael Guerreiro and Daizen Maeda narrowly missing an inviting cross from Arne Engels. Bayern, struggling to break through, had their best first-half chance just before the break when Harry Kane rattled the crossbar. The England captain, still feeling the effects of a knock from Bayern’s weekend clash against Leverkusen, was substituted at halftime.

The second half saw Bayern step up their attack, but it was Celtic who capitalized on defensive lapses to take the lead through Kuehn. With Brendan Rodgers’ side in control, Bayern had to respond quickly. Goretzka and Leroy Sane tested Kasper Schmeichel, but the Danish goalkeeper was in inspired form, producing a series of crucial saves.

Schmeichel seemed to have done enough to send the match into extra time, denying Goretzka again in stoppage time, but Davies reacted quickest to slot home the rebound and break Celtic’s hearts.

"It was just such a cruel way to not even lose the game but to go out of the competition," Rodgers said after the match. "A real heroic performance, just unfortunate at the end. I think our European credibility has been restored this season, I think we built that up from last year, that's my takeaway from this season."

Despite Celtic’s spirited display, Bayern’s late equalizer ensured their passage into the knockout stage, maintaining their pursuit of European glory.
