Bayern Munich 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen: Kane double inspires Die Roten to victory over 10-man Die Werkself

Harry Kane delivered a match-winning performance as Bayern Munich secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in their Champions League round of 16 first-leg encounter on Wednesday. The England striker scored in both halves, guiding the Bavarians to their first win in seven meetings against Xabi Alonso’s side and giving them a commanding advantage ahead of next week’s return leg.
For Leverkusen, currently second in the Bundesliga behind Bayern, it was a night to forget. Sloppy defending and costly mistakes led to their worst performance of the season. "We did a lot of things right, otherwise you cannot beat such a team," said Bayern coach Vincent Kompany. "It's only the first half, we have to play them again and we need to deliver the same performance."
Bayern took control early, breaking the deadlock in the ninth minute when Kane powered home a header to end his four-game goal drought. The visitors nearly responded five minutes later, but Jeremie Frimpong was denied by Manuel Neuer, who marked his 150th Champions League appearance with a crucial save. Bayern continued to dominate, with Jamal Musiala hitting the crossbar as they pushed for a second.
Leverkusen struggled to find their usual rhythm, and their problems deepened in the 54th minute when goalkeeper Matej Kovar dropped a Joshua Kimmich cross, allowing Musiala to slot home from close range. The situation worsened when Nordi Mukiele received a second yellow card, reducing the visitors to 10 men. Kane then sealed the result in the 75th minute, calmly converting a penalty for his 31st goal of the season across all competitions.
"It will take time to process this game," Alonso admitted. "A lot went against us today, but that was our own fault. We didn't have good control and made big mistakes. But it's not over until it's over. The craziest things have already happened in football, and we'll fight to make something happen next week."
Bayern’s only setback on an otherwise perfect night came in the 58th minute when Neuer was forced off due to injury. The winners of this tie will go on to face either Feyenoord or Inter Milan in the quarter-finals.
