Bayern Munich thrash Atalanta 6–1 in Champions League last-16 first leg

Bayern Munich delivered one of the most commanding performances of this season’s UEFA Champions League knockout stage, crushing Atalanta 6–1 in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie.

The emphatic victory in Bergamo places the German champions firmly on course for the quarter-finals, where a blockbuster showdown against either Real Madrid or Manchester City could await.

Managed by Vincent Kompany, Bayern produced a ruthless attacking display that overwhelmed the Italian side from the opening whistle.

Early Bayern Pressure sets the Tone

Bayern’s dominance became clear almost immediately. After relentless early pressure, defender Josip Stanišić opened the scoring in the 12th minute. The goal came from a cleverly worked corner routine involving Michael Olise and Serge Gnabry, with Stanišić finishing from close range after Atalanta failed to clear their lines.

The early breakthrough settled Bayern, who continued to push forward aggressively.

Michael Olise leads Bayern’s Rampage

Olise was the standout performer of the night. The French winger doubled Bayern’s advantage in the 22nd minute with a superb curling strike after cutting in from the right flank. Just three minutes later, he played a key role again, setting up Gnabry to make it 3–0 and effectively end the contest before halftime.

Olise later added a spectacular second goal in the second half, completing a memorable performance that left the Atalanta defence struggling to cope with Bayern’s pace and movement.

Second-Half Goals seal dominant victory

Despite resting several key players initially, Kompany introduced reinforcements at halftime, including Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies. The changes only increased Bayern’s attacking threat.

  • Nicolas Jackson added the fourth goal early in the second half
  • Olise struck again with a stunning effort in the 64th minute
  • Musiala then completed the rout just minutes later after being set up by Jackson

Atalanta managed a late consolation goal through Mario Pašalić in stoppage time, but by then the contest had long been decided.

Atalanta’s European Run Nears Its End

For Atalanta, the defeat represents a harsh end to what had been an impressive Champions League journey. The Italian side had reached the last 16 after a dramatic knockout victory over Borussia Dortmund, raising hopes of another memorable European run.

However, Bayern’s clinical finishing and relentless pressing exposed the defensive gaps in Raffaele Palladino’s team. Unless they produce a historic comeback in Munich, Atalanta’s elimination will also mark the end of Italian clubs’ participation in this season’s Champions League.

Bayern eye heavyweight Quarter-Final Clash

With a five-goal aggregate advantage heading into the return leg in Munich, Bayern now appear almost certain to reach the quarter-finals.

The German giants could face a major test in the next round, with either Real Madrid or Manchester City likely to stand between them and a place in the semi-finals. If Tuesday’s performance is any indication, Bayern will head into that potential showdown full of confidence.
