Bayern Munich edge Boca Juniors 2-1 to secure FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Knockout spot

European giants Bayern Munich have officially booked their place in the knockout phase of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, grinding out a 2-1 victory over Argentina’s Boca Juniors in a thrilling Group D clash that tested both sides’ grit and tactical discipline.

Bayern Munich qualify for FIFA Club World Cup Round of 16, maintaining unbeaten record.

With this result, Bayern made it two wins from two and secured early qualification to the Round of 16, joining Brazil’s Flamengo at the top of the knockout chart. The Bundesliga champions delivered under pressure once again on the international stage, reaffirming their credentials as strong title contenders in this revamped edition of FIFA’s global club competition.

Harry Kane, the England captain, was at the heart of Bayern’s success, producing a goal and assist in a game that had everything - intensity, moments of brilliance, and a near upset.

Kane broke the deadlock in the 18th minute after Bayern's early dominance paid dividends. With his signature composure, he slotted home from 10 yards following a swift attacking move orchestrated by Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala.

But Boca Juniors were never going to fade away quietly.

The Argentine giants, known for their grit and resilience, roared back into the contest after the break. Miguel Merentiel levelled the score in the 63rd minute with a stunning solo effort. The Uruguayan forward danced past two defenders before rifling a low shot into the far corner, leaving Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer with no chance.

With the clock ticking and both teams eyeing a winner, it was Kane again who produced the spark. In the 84th minute, the striker received the ball under pressure near the halfway line, shrugged off a challenge, and threaded a perfect pass to Michael Olise. The Frenchman, recently signed from Crystal Palace, calmly side-footed the ball into the bottom corner to seal the win for Bayern.

Jamal Musiala injury update

While Bayern celebrated the win, there was concern over Jamal Musiala, who limped off just 25 minutes after coming on as a substitute. The Germany international appeared to suffer a hamstring issue, and manager Vincent Kompany confirmed post-match that further assessments would be needed.

Kane: “Massive Win for Us”

“It was a big performance from the guys,” Kane told DAZN after receiving the Player of the Match award. “We knew Boca Juniors would be tough, especially with how passionate their fans are. It’s great to score and help the team into the next round.”

Kane continued: “This tournament is massive. You’re playing the best clubs from every continent. Our mindset is clear—it’s us against us. We need to hit peak performance every game.”

Group D: Bayern On Top, Boca’s Hope Dwindles

With six points in two games, Bayern sit comfortably atop Group D. A draw in their final group match against Benfica will seal top spot and potentially set up a blockbuster Round of 16 clash against Premier League outfit Chelsea, who are currently second in their group following a loss to Flamengo.

For Boca Juniors, their path to the knockout stages has become mathematically difficult. They must defeat Auckland City convincingly in their final game and hope Benfica lose to Bayern—while overturning a seven-goal differential.
