Bears name Lions' offensive mastermind Ben Johnson as new Head Coach

The Chicago Bears have secured their future leadership, announcing Ben Johnson as their new head coach on Tuesday. The 38-year-old architect of the Detroit Lions' record-breaking offense joins the Bears after transforming their NFC North rivals into an offensive powerhouse.

Bears General Manager Ryan Poles expressed enthusiasm about the appointment: "A proven leader with winning pedigree and a mind toward innovation, we are excited to welcome Ben and his family to Chicago as our head coach. Throughout our search process, I was thoroughly impressed by Ben's character, intelligence, leadership and ability to connect. A progressive offensive mind, Ben's plan for all three phases of our team, which is centered on creating a winning and competitive environment, became evidently clear."

Johnson's success with the Lions has been remarkable. Under his three-year tenure as offensive coordinator, Detroit consistently ranked among the NFL's top five in total yards and points per game. The 2023 season showcased his peak achievement, with the Lions leading the NFL in scoring (33.2 points per game) and setting franchise records for points (564) and regular-season wins (15).

The new Bears head coach shared his excitement about the opportunity: "The Chicago Bears are a world-class franchise with a phenomenal history and incredible fanbase. I am thankful to George, Kevin, Ryan, and the entire organization for presenting me and my family with this tremendous opportunity. Having been on the opposing sideline, I can attest to how passionate Bears fans are about this city and their team, and I am honored to be their head coach."

Johnson faces the challenge of revitalizing a Bears offense that ranked last in yards (284.6) and tied for fourth-lowest in scoring (18.2 points per game). His immediate focus will be developing rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, as Chicago aims to rebuild their offensive identity.
