Bielefeld stun holders Leverkusen to reach DFB-Pokal final

Third-tier Arminia Bielefeld achieved a remarkable upset by defeating reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen 2-1, securing their first-ever appearance in the DFB-Pokal final during a memorable evening at the Schuco Arena.

Having eliminated Bundesliga teams in the previous three rounds, the hosts were no strangers to Xabi Alonso’s squad. However, the Westphalian team managed to come from behind to take the lead by halftime.

The match began quietly until Jonathan Tah scored from close range, having been left unmarked after a corner was flicked on at the near post.

Undeterred by this setback and the disparity in league status, Die Blauen quickly responded. A block by Piero Hincapié proved ineffective as the ball fell to Marius Worl, who struck low to equalize, matching Patrik Schick as the top scorer in this season’s DFB-Pokal.

Remarkably, this equalizer marked the beginning of Leverkusen's troubles, as Noah Sarenren Bazee failed to take advantage of Hincapié's hesitation, with Lukas Hradecky making a crucial save to deny the striker.

In a dramatic turn, Arminia took the lead just before halftime, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Louis Oppie’s free kick found Maximilian Grosser at the back post, who managed to get in front of a struggling Hincapié, giving his team an unexpected advantage as they headed into the break.

Having never reached the DFB-Pokal final despite four semi-final appearances, Michel Kniat’s team was just 45 minutes away from history. Even with the introduction of Bayer’s star striker Victor Boniface, the home side effectively contained their Bundesliga rivals.

In the first 15 minutes of the second half, the visitors failed to register a single shot on goal, while Arminia surprisingly dominated possession and controlled the match, with Joel Grodowski missing a crucial opportunity that could have brought them closer to a trip to Berlin.

Ultimately, the visiting team compelled Jonas Kersken to make a crucial save, as the Arminia goalkeeper lunged across his goal to deflect a header from Nordi Mukiele that was awkwardly heading towards the bottom corner.

Next, it was Schick who put the home side's composure to the test, as his header directed back across the goal narrowly missed the outside of the post.

However, it was too late for Leverkusen, who failed to deliver a strong performance that evening, becoming yet another top-tier team to fall victim to Arminia’s remarkable journey to the Olympiastadion.
