Blazers overturn 22-point deficit to defeat Suns 109-104

With a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds from DeAndre Ayton and 23 points and 7 rebounds from Anfernee Simons, the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Phoenix Suns 109-104 on Tuesday night, ending a seven-game losing run.

The Suns suffered their fifth loss in seven games, as the Portland Trail Blazers emerged victorious. Kevin Durant of the Suns led all scorers with an impressive 40 points, while Devin Booker contributed 26 points and seven assists.

In the closing moments of the game, Simons' layup with 10.7 seconds remaining halted Phoenix's late rally, as Portland had previously extended their lead to 14 points in the fourth quarter. Reflecting on his final basket, Simons mentioned that he had initially contemplated going up with two hands but ultimately opted for a floater.

Ayton, who played the most minutes in the game with 40, made a season-high 18 field goal attempts against his former team. However, he downplayed any additional motivation against the team that drafted him, emphasizing his focus on establishing the Trail Blazers' identity in the league.

Blazers coach Chauncey Billups acknowledged Ayton's potential and deliberately designed plays to encourage his aggression. Billups recognized the natural extra motivation Ayton might have had facing his former team but emphasized the importance of Ayton's commitment to the Trail Blazers.

Jerami Grant contributed 22 points for Portland, while Malcolm Brogdon provided 14 points and four assists off the bench. Brogdon stepped in for Shaedon Sharpe, who exited the game due to a groin injury.

Portland's success from beyond the arc was a significant factor in their victory, as they made 14 of 28 three-pointers compared to Phoenix's five. Durant acknowledged this discrepancy, stating that the Suns fell short by nine three-pointers.

Additionally, Portland's improved ball control in the second half played a crucial role in their success. After committing 11 turnovers in the first half, they limited themselves to just six turnovers in the latter half.

The Blazers seized their first lead since the opening minute of the game in the third quarter, outscoring Phoenix 38-20 in that period. This strong performance propelled them to an 87-81 lead heading into the final frame.

The Phoenix Suns quickly established their dominance in the game, taking a commanding 36-20 lead after the first quarter. They continued to extend their advantage, reaching a staggering 22-point lead in the first half. The Suns' exceptional defensive performance played a pivotal role in their triumph, capitalizing on 17 turnovers by the Portland Trail Blazers and converting them into 23 points.

Looking ahead, the Suns will be facing the Sacramento Kings on Friday, while the Trail Blazers will be hosting the Washington Wizards on Thursday night.
