Bodø/Glimt beat Sporting CP 3–0 to edge closer to historic Champions League Quarter-Final

Bodø/Glimt continued their stunning Champions League campaign with a commanding 3–0 victory over Sporting CP in the first leg of their round-of-16 encounter.
Goals from Sondre Brunstad Fet, Ole Didrik Blomberg and Kasper Høgh at the compact yet intimidating Aspmyra Stadion gave the Norwegian champions a commanding advantage heading into the return leg.
The result reinforced Bodø/Glimt’s reputation as one of the most exciting surprise packages in this season’s UEFA Champions League.
From the opening whistle, the hosts imposed their high-tempo style on the Portuguese visitors. Bodø/Glimt nearly struck within the first ten minutes when Jens Petter Hauge met a cross from Håkon Evjen with a powerful volley that drifted narrowly wide of the target.
Evjen remained heavily involved in the early attacking waves and forced a sharp save from Sporting goalkeeper Rui Silvashortly afterwards.
Sporting briefly threatened on the counterattack through Brazilian winger Francisco Trincão, whose quick break created an opening for Luis Guilherme. However, Bodø/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Haikin reacted quickly to deny the visitors.
Fet breaks the deadlock
The breakthrough arrived in the 32nd minute. Sporting defender Georgios Vagiannidis clumsily bundled Fet to the ground inside the penalty area, leaving the referee with little hesitation in awarding a spot-kick.
Fet stepped up himself and calmly converted the penalty, sending Silva the wrong way and igniting celebrations among the home supporters. The goal gave Bodø/Glimt deserved reward for their early dominance.
Blomberg extends the lead before the break
The Norwegian side doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time with a move that highlighted their attacking sharpness. A deflected pass from Hauge fell kindly to Blomberg inside the box, and the winger kept his composure to guide a precise finish into the bottom corner.
Heading into halftime with a two-goal cushion, Bodø/Glimt had firmly seized control of the tie.
Høgh seals the victory
Sporting improved after the interval and attempted to increase the tempo of the game. Former La Liga striker Luis Javier Suárez tested Haikin with a driven effort at the near post, but the goalkeeper produced a solid stop.
Despite enjoying more possession, Sporting struggled to break down the disciplined Norwegian defence. Bodø/Glimt instead delivered the decisive blow in the 71st minute.
Hauge showcased his creativity down the left flank before delivering a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Høgh timed his run perfectly, slipping between defenders Nuno Santos and Gonçalo Inácio to convert from close range.
The goal effectively sealed a memorable night for the hosts.
Statistical dominance highlights Bodø/Glimt’s rise
Beyond the scoreline, the numbers told the story of Bodø/Glimt’s superiority. The Norwegian champions generated an expected goals (xG) total of 2.46, compared to Sporting’s 0.51, reflecting the quality of chances created throughout the match.
Their attacking efficiency has been a hallmark of their European campaign. The victory also marked Bodø/Glimt’s fifth consecutive Champions League win, making them only the fifth club from outside Europe’s traditional top five leagues to achieve that feat.

Individual Milestones add to historic night
Blomberg’s strike also pushed him past an important milestone, making him the fourth Bodø/Glimt player to record at least five goal contributions in this season’s Champions League. Remarkably, only Bayern Munich currently boast more players with five or more goal involvements in the competition.
Meanwhile, Høgh’s goal was his fifth in the tournament, equalling the record for the most goals scored by a Danish player in a single Champions League campaign, matching the achievements of Nicklas Bendtner in 2009-10 and Rasmus Højlund in 2023-24.
Quarter-Final dream within reach
For Bodø/Glimt, the result represents another milestone in what has become a remarkable Champions League journey. With a three-goal advantage heading into the second leg in Portugal, the Norwegian side now stands on the verge of reaching the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier club competition for the first time.
Should they complete the job, their campaign will rank among the most extraordinary underdog stories in recent Champions League history.
