Borussia Dortmund 1-1 LOSC Lille: Lille hold Dortmund to draw in Champions League last-16 first leg tie

Lille secured a crucial 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday, with Hákon Haraldsson’s 68th-minute strike canceling out Karim Adeyemi’s first-half opener. Despite dominating the opening period, last season’s finalists failed to capitalize on their chances and allowed the French side to snatch a valuable away goal.
Dortmund started cautiously before Adeyemi broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute with a powerful low drive that struck the post on its way in. The hosts pushed for a second, with Nico Schlotterbeck going close in the 38th minute and Pascal Gross finding the net just before halftime, only for his effort to be ruled offside. However, after the break, the German side lost their momentum and allowed Lille to grow into the game.
Lille, struggling to penetrate a well-organized Dortmund defense for over an hour, finally found their breakthrough with a slick passing move that ended in Haraldsson scoring while off-balance past Gregor Kobel. The Icelandic midfielder became just the second player from his country to net in the Champions League knockout rounds.
"We played a good game today, especially in the second half," said Lille coach Bruno Genesio. "The 1-1 draw has put us in a very good position for the second leg. But we will have to deliver a very big game at home if we want to reach the quarter-finals."
Dortmund coach Niko Kovac expressed his frustration with his team’s second-half display. "We saw two different halves. We had a good first half, deserved the goal, had chances to score again," he said. "The second half we had no control, we were far too passive, brought ourselves into trouble. We were only reacting and from Lille's only chance we conceded an equaliser. We now expect a big fight in Lille but we have the expectation to advance."
Despite a late push, Dortmund failed to create any clear-cut chances and suffered a further setback when midfielder Daniel Svensson had to be substituted after twisting his knee when Lille’s André Gomes stepped on his foot from behind.
With the second leg set for March 12 in France, Dortmund will need a strong performance to keep their Champions League hopes alive, while Lille will look to capitalize on their home advantage for a potential quarter-final clash against either Benfica or Barcelona.
