Borussia Dortmund 3-1 Mainz 05: Dortmund return to winning ways with victory over in-form Mainz

Borussia Dortmund ascended into the upper half of the Bundesliga standings, recovering from consecutive league defeats to secure a 3-1 victory over UEFA Champions League hopefuls FSV Mainz at Signal Iduna Park.

New manager Niko Kovac, who had experienced the worst start since Jurgen Roberin in 2007 with four losses in his first six matches, was eager for a turnaround against the high-flying Mainz.

With only 35 points accumulated after 26 matches, Dortmund recorded their poorest performance in a decade, leaving their chances of European qualification through the league slim. Nevertheless, the hosts began positively, energizing the home crowd, who were vocal as the visitors absorbed the early pressure.

The first half hour passed without significant events, but as halftime approached, Dortmund found the breakthrough.

Caught off guard during a transition, Mainz struggled to respond to a well-placed ball into the box that reached Karim Adeyemi, who then set up Maximilian Beier for an easy tap-in.

Only league leaders Bayern Munich had allowed fewer goals than Die Nullfunfer, yet just three minutes later, BVB extended their lead from a corner, with Emre Can heading in at the back post.

The visitors started the second half aggressively, launching a series of shots at the Dortmund goal after the restart.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel had to remain vigilant to fend off a significantly improved Mainz, and after maintaining their defensive strength, BVB scored a third goal midway through the half.

Once again, it originated from a superb corner by Nico Schlotterbeck, whose precise delivery found Beier's head for his second goal of the match.

The visitors quickly responded through Paul Nebel, who scored after a somewhat chaotic sequence of play.

Unfortunately, that hard-fought goal for Mainz arrived too late to spark a comeback, as Pascal Gross struck the post from a close distance while Dortmund managed to hold on during the closing moments.

Eintracht Frankfurt's victory on Saturday resulted in Bo Henriksen's team dropping to fourth place in the standings, remaining two points ahead of fifth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach as they pursue their first-ever Champions League appearance.

On the other hand, Dortmund's win places them just four points shy of sixth place, but with four teams positioned between them and a guaranteed spot for European qualification, time is running out for Kovač to orchestrate a late resurgence.
