Borussia Dortmund 3-1 Shakhtar Donetsk: Dortmund defeat visitors but fall short of Champions League top eight

Borussia Dortmund successfully upheld their part of the agreement by securing a 3-1 victory against Shakhtar Donetsk during their eighth and final matchday of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) group stage at Signal Iduna Park.
However, they will now face a playoff to advance to the Round of 16, as other results did not favor them on a night that marked an extension of their impressive unbeaten streak against Ukrainian teams (W7, D2).
As anticipated, Dortmund started the match with strong momentum, taking the lead shortly after the 15-minute mark. A careless backpass from the Shakhtar midfield allowed Nico Schlotterbeck to send the ball into the penalty area, where Karim Adeyemi aimed for the top corner.
Although his shot was likely to be blocked, Serhou Guirassy intervened, managing to push the ball over the line, which ignited the Yellow Wall and marked his sixth goal in the UCL this season out of a possible eight matches.
Schlotterbeck also played a vital role defensively, executing a crucial last-minute block that thwarted Heorhiy Sudakov from scoring a certain equalizer during a rare counterattack by Shakhtar. Normal proceedings resumed shortly thereafter, as a turnover allowed Maximilian Beier to deliver a long pass.
Julian Brandt skillfully controlled the ball and passed it to the advancing Guirassy, who struck into the far corner, increasing both his and Dortmund’s score at a pivotal moment in the match.
With no favorable results at halftime, Der BVB's only viable strategy to avoid a playoff was to maximize their scoring. Guirassy came close to completing his hat-trick early in the second half, but a remarkable save from Dmytro Riznyk denied him.
It appeared that a third goal for BVB was imminent; however, shortly after this missed opportunity, Shakhtar capitalized on a blunder by Gregor Kobel, allowing Marlon Gomes to slide in and score.
Dortmund supporters may have experienced a sense of déjà vu, recalling the recent draw after squandering a 2-0 lead against Werder Bremen.
Nevertheless, the home team persisted, and another free kick resulted in a spectacular save by Riznyk shortly after the hour mark, this time thwarting a header from Ramy Bensebaini. This indicated that the anticipated rout was not materializing. Ultimately, Shakhtar played a minimal role, as even a draw was insufficient to keep their hopes alive in the UEFA Champions League.
As the visitors began to show signs of fatigue, Dortmund seized the opportunity to secure their victory with just over ten minutes remaining in regulation time. They executed this in splendid style, with a delightful backheel from Gio Reyna setting up Bensebaini, who then delicately chipped the ball over Riznyk.
However, finishing in 10th place marked the end of Dortmund's journey, and they will now confront either Sporting CP or Club Brugge in a two-legged encounter to advance to the Round of 16—a stage that Der BVB has reached in five of their last six UEFA Champions League campaigns.
