Borussia Dortmund Hangs On to Beat Hoffenheim 3-1 With 10 Men

Borussia Dortmund managed to secure a 3-1 victory over Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Friday, despite playing with 10 men for a significant portion of the game. While this win propelled Dortmund to the top of the table (temporarily), it continued the trend of Dortmund narrowly winning closely contested matches, often giving their opponents multiple opportunities.
The match took a frustrating turn for some Dortmund players when Ramy Bensebaini received a second yellow card and was sent off in the 71st minute for kicking the ball away during a routine throw-in, with the score at 2-1. Marco Reus, who had scored Dortmund's second goal, was later booked for throwing a water bottle onto the field from the bench.
Dortmund's coach, Edin Terzic, had previously acknowledged the team's struggle to find its form and mentioned the need to move past the disappointment of losing the Bundesliga title to Bayern Munich in the final minutes of the previous season.
Niclas Füllkrug opened the scoring for Dortmund in the 18th minute, marking his first goal for the team since joining from Werder Bremen. Five minutes later, Dortmund's Mats Hummels conceded a penalty with a challenge on Anton Stach, allowing Andrej Kramarić to convert from the spot for Hoffenheim.
Dortmund regained the lead just before halftime, as Reus capitalized on a deflection by Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann after Donyell Malen's cross. Despite Hoffenheim having opportunities to equalize, Julian Ryerson sealed the win for Dortmund deep into stoppage time with a counterattack goal.
Dortmund's next challenge is a potentially crucial Champions League game against AC Milan on Wednesday, following their opening game loss to Paris Saint-Germain. The outcome of this matchup could have a significant impact on the qualification from their competitive group. Milan, on the other hand, is coming off a goalless draw with Newcastle.
The loss brought an end to Hoffenheim's four-game winning streak and was a setback for their American coach, Pellegrino Matarazzo, as they currently hold the sixth position in the Bundesliga table.
