Borussia Dortmund sacks Nuri Sahin after Champions League defeat and poor form

Borussia Dortmund has terminated head coach Nuri Sahin's contract following a disastrous run of form that has put the club's European aspirations in jeopardy. The German side confirmed the dismissal on Wednesday after a shocking 2-1 loss to Bologna in the Champions League.
"After four defeats in a row and only one win from the last nine games ... we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation," managing director Lars Ricken stated.
The club's recent performance has been dire, with Dortmund dropping to 10th place in the Bundesliga after losing all three league matches in 2025. Their Champions League campaign saw a particularly painful moment when they conceded two goals in two minutes after taking an early lead against Bologna.
"This decision also hurts me personally, but it was no longer avoidable after the game in Bologna," Ricken added.
Sahin, a 36-year-old former player and coach at the club, had signed a contract until 2027 but will now be replaced by Under-19 coach Mike Tullberg for the upcoming match against Werder Bremen.
The sudden departure highlights Dortmund's struggle to maintain their competitive edge after reaching the Champions League final last year, signaling a potentially challenging period for the storied German club.
