Bournemouth 0-2 Liverpool: Reds extend Premier League lead as Mohamed Salah shines in victory

Liverpool tightened their grip on the Premier League title race with a commanding 2-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday, opening up a nine-point gap at the top. Mohamed Salah was once again the hero, scoring both goals to continue his incredible form this season.

Arne Slot’s squad faced a tough challenge against a Bournemouth side unbeaten in 11 league matches. However, Salah proved decisive once again, taking his Premier League tally to 21 goals this season.

The Egyptian forward broke the deadlock in the 30th minute, confidently converting a penalty. He later sealed the win in the 75th minute with a stunning curling effort, marking his fifth season with 20 or more Premier League goals.

"It feels good to be fair, scoring goals, the team winning, it's an incredible feeling," Salah said. "But I said many times before, the main target is winning the Premier League. We are going in the right direction."

Despite the defeat, Bournemouth, who remain seventh in the table, put up a strong fight. Antoine Semenyo struck the woodwork when the score was 0-0, and Marcus Tavernier hit the post just before Salah’s second goal.

Liverpool now sit on 56 points from 23 matches, with second-placed Arsenal and Nottingham Forest trailing on 47. Arsenal will host Manchester City, who are currently fourth with 41 points, on Sunday.

Bournemouth had previously defeated the other three top-four teams at home this season, raising hopes of another upset. However, Liverpool showcased their clinical edge, proving why they remain title favorites.

Salah’s spectacular second goal—a left-footed curler from the right side of the box—secured his place in history, moving him up to sixth in the all-time Premier League scoring charts with 178 goals, surpassing Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

The result was heartbreaking for Bournemouth, especially after Tavernier’s close-range effort struck the post just moments before Salah’s decisive strike.

Bournemouth started the match with intensity, testing Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson within the first 15 seconds. Semenyo then rattled the frame of the goal with a powerful effort, but Liverpool gradually took control.

Virgil van Dijk provided a calming presence in defense, and the Reds took the lead after Lewis Cook fouled Cody Gakpo in the box, allowing Salah to dispatch the penalty with precision.

Bournemouth thought they had equalized in the 37th minute when David Brooks slotted home from a Milos Kerkez assist. However, a VAR review ruled Kerkez fractionally offside.

Slot’s side have now gone 19 league games unbeaten, and despite not being at their best, they continue to grind out crucial wins.

"We had to play on top of our abilities and we needed a bit of luck to win this game," Slot admitted. "They were constantly trying to do things. I didn't think we controlled the game."

With 15 matches remaining, Liverpool look unstoppable in their pursuit of the Premier League crown.
