Bournemouth 2 - 1 Man City: Antoine Semenyo, Evanilson strike as Premier League Champions Fall on the South Coast

Manchester City suffered their first league defeat of the season, going down 2-1 to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in a spirited Cherries performance. Bournemouth’s goals, courtesy of Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson, marked their first-ever league victory over City and a much-needed boost, propelling them further up the table.

From the outset, Bournemouth appeared sharp and determined, creating early pressure with an opening two-minute double-save challenge from Ederson, who denied Semenyo and Justin Kluivert. City’s struggles were evident, managing no shots on target in the first half, while Bournemouth capitalized through Semenyo, who deftly finished after Milos Kerkez’s pass. Evanilson extended the lead in the second half with a slick finish off a cross from Kerkez.

Although Josko Gvardiol’s header in the 80th minute provided City with a glimmer of hope, Bournemouth held on as City’s efforts were thwarted, notably when Erling Haaland’s close-range shot hit the post in stoppage time.

Manager Reactions

Andoni Iraola, Bournemouth’s manager, celebrated the rare victory, calling it “incredible” and an essential milestone for the club. He emphasized pride in his team's performance against such formidable opponents, noting it was City's first league loss in 2024, which made the win particularly special.

Pep Guardiola, on the other hand, acknowledged City’s lack of intensity and the challenges they faced with a limited squad due to numerous injuries. Key absences included Rodri, De Bruyne, Ruben Dias, and John Stones, among others, which Guardiola said impacted the team’s ability to sustain energy and focus, especially against Bournemouth's pressing and long balls.

City’s Injury Concerns

City’s lineup was significantly weakened, with only 13 fit first-team players available, as Walker, Akanji, and Ake returned despite lingering fitness concerns. In addition to long-term injuries to Rodri and Bobb, Guardiola revealed that Ruben Dias and John Stones face extended recovery times, leaving City without critical defensive options as they push through an intense season.

With Liverpool taking full advantage, moving to the top of the table after their own comeback win against Brighton, City face mounting pressure to adapt amid a congested fixture list and injury setbacks.
