Brazil great Marta set to retire from international football at end of 2024

Marta, the highest goal scorer in the history of Brazilian men's and women's football, is set to retire from international competition this year. The 38-year-old striker, currently playing for Orlando Pride in the United States since 2017, is aiming to participate in her sixth Olympics at the upcoming Paris Games.

In a recent interview with CNN, Marta expressed her intentions, stating, "If I get the opportunity to compete in the Olympics, I will savor every moment because this year marks my final year with the national team. As of 2025, there will be no more participation from Marta as an active athlete in the national team."

Remaining optimistic about the future of young athletes, Marta looks forward to the new opportunities that lie ahead in women's football. Known as "Queen Marta," she has scored a record 116 goals in 175 appearances for Brazil and has also set the record for the most goals in the Women's World Cup with 17 goals.

Having won three Copa America Femenina titles and earning silver medals at the 2004 and 2008 Games, Marta leaves behind a remarkable legacy in Brazilian football. From her early days at Vasco da Gama to her stints in Sweden and the US, Marta's impact on the game has been immense throughout her illustrious career.
