Breezy Johnson wins historic Olympic Gold — then watches the Medal break in celebration

Breezy Johnson’s long road to Olympic redemption reached its peak on the slopes of Cortina d’Ampezzo — and then took an unexpected turn moments later.
The 30-year-old American alpine skier became the first athlete from Team USA to win gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics, claiming victory in the women’s downhill in dramatic fashion. Johnson clocked a winning time of 1:36.10, edging Germany’s Emma Aicher by just 0.04 seconds on one of the sport’s most demanding courses.
Italy’s Sofia Goggia, the reigning Olympic downhill silver medalist and 2018 champion, rounded out the podium with bronze, but the day belonged to Johnson — both for her performance and the surreal aftermath that followed.
As Johnson celebrated on the medal stand, jumping in joy with her gold around her neck, the ribbon attachment suddenly gave way. The medal slipped free, breaking at the top connection point.
“It’s definitely heavy, heavier than I expected,” Johnson said afterward, holding up the detached pieces with a laugh. “I think that’s maybe why it broke.”
Despite the unusual mishap, officials assured the Olympic champion the medal would be repaired.
A Landmark Win for Team USA
Johnson’s victory marked just the second Olympic women’s downhill gold in U.S. history, following Lindsey Vonn’s triumph at the 2010 Vancouver Games. It was also Team USA’s first medal of the Milano–Cortina Olympics, providing an early boost to the American campaign.
The win carried deeper meaning for Johnson, who attacked the iconic Olympia delle Tofana course with controlled aggression. Starting sixth, she pushed the limits through high-speed sections, accepting small errors in exchange for momentum.
“I knew it was fast in some of the places where I made mistakes,” she explained. “That’s the line you’re always trying to walk, and today it was enough.”
Her calculated risk paid off.
Emotions run high after Lindsey Vonn crash
The celebration was tempered by concern for Johnson’s teammate Lindsey Vonn, who suffered a heavy crash earlier in the race and was airlifted from the slope. The race was delayed for nearly 30 minutes, and cameras caught Johnson visibly emotional while waiting for competition to resume.
The moment stirred memories of her own heartbreak at the same venue. In 2022, Johnson crashed during a Cortina training run, suffering a knee injury that forced her to miss the Beijing Winter Olympics entirely.
Four years later, she returned to the same mountain — and left with gold.
A Medal Moment Fans Won’t Forget
Johnson later joked about the medal mishap, turning the press conference into an impromptu show-and-tell as she displayed the broken ribbon and medal pieces.
“It’s heavy, it’s broken — it’s a look,” she said, smiling.
She wasn’t alone. Fellow American figure skater Alysa Liu also posted on social media after experiencing a similar issue with her team event medal ribbon earlier in the Games.
What’s Next for Breezy Johnson?
Johnson could add to her medal haul later in the Olympics, with a potential appearance in the women’s combined team event, possibly alongside Mikaela Shiffrin. If so, she joked she might celebrate a little more carefully next time.
For now, the image of Johnson holding a broken gold medal has already become one of the defining early moments of Milano–Cortina 2026 — a symbol of both the weight of achievement and the emotion behind it.
