Brendan Rodgers resigns as Celtic Manager; Martin O’Neill returns as interim boss

Celtic have confirmed that Brendan Rodgers has resigned as manager after a difficult start to the season, with club legend Martin O’Neill returning to take charge on an interim basis.
The defending Scottish Premiership champions have struggled in recent weeks and now sit eight points behind league leaders Hearts following a 3-1 defeat at Tynecastle on Saturday. Rodgers’ departure marks the end of his second spell at Celtic Park, which began in 2023.
In an official statement, the club said:
“Celtic can confirm that Brendan Rodgers has tendered his resignation. It has been accepted and Brendan will leave his role with immediate effect. The club appreciates Brendan’s contribution to Celtic during his two very successful periods at the club, and we wish him further success in the future.”
O’Neill, who managed Celtic between 2000 and 2005, is returning to familiar ground nearly two decades later. During his previous tenure, he won three league titles and guided the team to the 2003 UEFA Cup Final. He will be assisted by former player Shaun Maloney as Celtic prepares for a busy week that includes a midweek clash against Falkirk and a League Cup semi-final against Rangers on Sunday.
Rodgers leaves behind a strong legacy, having delivered back-to-back Premiership titles in his latest stint, adding to the two league crowns he secured in 2017 and 2018 during his first spell. However, reports suggest his relationship with the club’s hierarchy had become strained amid growing frustration over what was perceived as a lack of ambition in the transfer market.
The club has begun the search for a permanent successor, with former manager Ange Postecoglou, recently departed from Nottingham Forest, among those tipped as a possible candidate.
O’Neill’s return injects both nostalgia and stability into Celtic’s season as the club looks to regroup and revive its title challenge under one of its most successful former managers.
