Brentford 2-2 Manchester City: Bees fight back from two down to earn point against Cityzens

Brentford delivered a remarkable performance against the reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City, coming back from a two-goal deficit to secure a commendable 2-2 draw.

This result leaves City with only one victory in their last ten away matches across all competitions, recording two draws and seven losses.

After their impressive 8-0 victory over Salford City in the FA Cup, City aimed for a fourth consecutive win but faced a formidable opponent boasting the second-best home record in the Premier League this season.

From the outset, Thomas Frank’s team appeared threatening, with Mads Roerslev advancing down the right wing and attempting to set up Yoane Wissa, although the pass to Bryan Mbeumo did not materialize.

Wissa and Mbeumo consistently troubled the City defense, with Mbeumo forcing a save from Stefan Ortega as he surged forward. It was not until the middle of the first half that Guardiola’s side created a significant opportunity, which fell to Erling Haaland.

Kevin De Bruyne delivered a cross into the box, where Haaland awaited at the back post, but he could only direct his header into the side netting. The Bees continued to apply pressure, with Keane Lewis-Potter breaking through on goal but opting to pass rather than shoot, leading to a clearance by City.

After the interval, City emerged with renewed vigor, as Savinho embarked on an exhilarating solo run, striking the woodwork. The visitors persisted in their attempts, with Haaland missing the target again by heading over the bar.

Savinho squandered another opportunity just before the hour mark when his shot hit the side netting. However, in the 66th minute, the relentless pressure finally bore fruit as City took the lead.

Savinho played a crucial role, finding De Bruyne on the right flank, who delivered a masterful assist with a perfectly placed cross, allowing Phil Foden to slot the ball into the corner.

Frank would have been outraged by the ease with which his team was penetrated, yet they quickly equalized after Mbeumo maneuvered around Ortega, directing the ball wide. His attempt was assisted by Wissa, but Nathan Ake made an exceptional recovery run to block the shot on the line.

As the Bees sought to secure an equalizer, they were caught off guard on the counterattack, allowing City to extend their lead. Savinho played a pivotal role once more; his intricate run ended with a shot that was saved, but Foden was present to decisively convert the rebound.

With less than ten minutes remaining, Wissa managed to score, having been left unmarked to convert Roerslev’s cross.

Despite appearing to be on course for victory, City’s defensive vulnerabilities surfaced again, as Christian Norgaard was afforded the space to head in the equalizer during stoppage time, securing a point for the Bees and halting a streak of three consecutive losses in their encounters.
