Brentford 5-3 Wolves: Brentford edge out resilient Wolves in thrilling eight-goal showdown

Brentford and Wolves played out a thrilling encounter at the Gtech Community Stadium, where a frantic first half saw six goals in a 5-3 victory for the hosts. Despite some signs of improvement from Wolves under manager Gary O’Neil in the second half, the damage was done early, and they remain winless and rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table as they head into the international break.

The action started at a blistering pace, with two goals inside the first four minutes. Nathan Collins headed Brentford in front after being left unmarked in the Wolves box to nod home Mikkel Damsgaard’s cross from the byline. Brentford came close to a remarkable Premier League feat of four consecutive first-minute goals but missed it by just 16 seconds.

Wolves responded almost instantly, with Nélson Semedo’s cutback setting up Mateus Cunha, who slotted home from 12 yards to bring the game level in the fourth minute.

The frantic pace continued, and Brentford regained the lead in the 20th minute through a penalty awarded by VAR. Mario Lemina was deemed to have impeded Collins, and Brian Mbeumo coolly converted from the spot.

However, Wolves fought back again, equalizing just four minutes later. Jørgen Strand Larsen raced past his defender to meet Rayan Aït-Nouri's low cross and score from close range, making it 2-2.

Brentford refused to let up, and just 90 seconds later, Christian Nørgaard restored their lead with a close-range finish, capitalizing on Wolves' defensive frailties. Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was under siege, and despite making key saves to deny Kevin Schade, he couldn’t stop Ethan Pinnock from heading home Brentford’s fourth goal in first-half stoppage time, leaving Wolves 4-2 down at the break.

Second-Half Performance

Gary O’Neil made no major changes at halftime, but Wolves were more composed defensively in the second half, preventing Brentford from adding to their lead for much of the half. They showed glimpses of creativity going forward, but Brentford’s defensive organization frustrated them as the hosts were content to sit back and protect their lead.

Late in the game, Brentford substitute Fábio Carvalho put the result beyond doubt, scoring a fifth goal in the closing minutes. Wolves' Aït-Nouri managed a late consolation, but it was too little, too late.

Brentford remain unbeaten at home, extending their solid run of form at the Gtech Community Stadium, while Wolves’ winless start to the season raises serious concerns about a prolonged battle against relegation. O’Neil will need to address Wolves’ defensive vulnerabilities if they are to turn their season around after the international break.
