Brighton 0-4 Manchester City: Foden double sees off Seagulls and keeps Citizens in charge of title race

Manchester City triumphed on the south coast, securing their pursuit of another Premier League title. No team has ever won four successive English crowns, but Pep Guardiola’s side are now just one point behind leaders Arsenal with a game in hand after a convincing 4-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Seagulls, who had only won one of the last 15 encounters this century, witnessed an early Danny Welbeck opportunity being saved.

Following that, the game was completely dominated by the visitors. Nathan Ake missed a chance from a Phil Foden free-kick, but Kevin De Bruyne managed to score with a spectacular diving header, connecting with Kyle Walker's cross to nod the ball into the top corner from deep within the penalty area.

Foden then extended the lead to 2-0 after controversially earning a free-kick 20 yards out, scoring with a deflected shot that caught Jason Steele off guard after hitting Pascal Gross.

The English player added another goal shortly after, calmly finding the bottom corner after Bernardo Silva won possession when the hosts attempted to play out from the back.

Roberto De Zerbi made some substitutions at half-time, resulting in a more balanced game in the second half.

Despite this, Manchester City continued to create numerous opportunities, with Julian Alvarez's powerful shot being saved by the goalkeeper. However, the Argentine soon found the back of the net, ending his 10-game goal drought in the Premier League by scoring into an empty net after being set up by Walker.

Brighton's frustration grew when Joao Pedro was not awarded a penalty after appearing to be tripped in the box by Josko Gvardiol.

Nonetheless, even if the penalty had been given, it would have only been a consolation goal as Brighton's winless streak extended to five matches, diminishing their chances of securing a European spot.

Despite City's significant victory, their goal difference is eight goals worse than Arsenal's. However, a flawless record in the remaining matches will guarantee them the title.
