Brighton 1-2 Chelsea: Blues continue fine form with win over Seagulls to move into sixth

Chelsea secured a 2-1 triumph over Brighton, thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku. This victory propelled Mauricio Pochettino's team past Newcastle, allowing them to claim the sixth spot in the Premier League standings.
After a disappointing start to the season, Chelsea have finally showcased their potential in recent months. They have been in great form, losing only one of their previous 13 Premier League matches.
This impressive run has put them in contention for Europa League football, which is a clear sign of progress under Pochettino's leadership.
On the other hand, Brighton is already out of the race for European campaigns but was determined to give their fans something to celebrate in their final home match of the season.
The first half of the game was filled with action. Noni Madueke tested Bart Verbruggen with the first shot on target just three minutes into the game. Both teams had their chances, with Simon Adingra shooting wide and Palmer's effort being comfortably saved.
Chelsea's dominance was evident when Palmer scored a clinical goal, assisted by Marc Cucurella. Despite the ball being fired at head height, Palmer managed to stoop low and direct a marvelous header into the net, leaving Verbruggen helpless.
There was controversy later in the half when Tariq Lamptey appeared to elbow Mykhaylo Mudryk in the head. However, VAR chose not to intervene, and Lamptey escaped punishment. In the dying moments of injury time, João Pedro hit the crossbar with a header, reminding Chelsea of his threat. Nicolas Jackson also had a goal disallowed due to offside and a push on Lamptey.
The second half started with Chelsea squandering numerous golden opportunities. Jackson, in particular, failed to provide the decisive pass on multiple occasions.
Brighton retaliated by launching an offensive of their own, with Pascal Gross narrowly missing the target from close range.
Eventually, Pochettino's team managed to secure a second goal through a collaboration between Frenchmen Malo Gusto and Nkunku. Gusto delivered a precise low pass, which Nkunku swiftly slotted into the bottom corner, marking his third goal of the season, despite struggling with injuries.
In an effort to mount a comeback, the home team pressed forward. Reece James, who came on as a substitute and captained Chelsea, received a justified red card for a petulant kick aimed at Joao Pedro.
In stoppage time, Ansu Fati struck the post, but Danny Welbeck capitalized on the opportunity and tapped the ball into the net from within the six-yard box.
This goal provided hope for Roberto Di Zerbi's team, but their efforts were in vain as Chelsea managed to hold on to their lead.
Following Newcastle United's loss to Manchester United, Chelsea now sits in sixth place in the table and still has a chance to catch up to Tottenham Hotspur, who currently holds fifth place.
On the other hand, Brighton is barely holding on to their position in the top half of the table, having only won two of their last 12 matches in the Premier League.
