Brighton 2-1 Bournemouth: Seagulls end Cherries' fine away run to climb up to eighth in Premier League

Danny Welbeck's first Premier League goal since October was sufficient to secure a 2-1 home victory for Brighton & Hove Albion against Bournemouth, thereby ending the Cherries' impressive seven-match unbeaten streak in away Premier League fixtures.

After receiving his first Premier League start, Diego Gomez quickly made an impact by slicing through the Bournemouth defense, delivering a through ball to Kaoru Mitoma, who unfortunately directed his shot wide.

However, Gomez's subsequent incisive pass proved to be more consequential, resulting in a penalty when referee Michael Oliver, perhaps somewhat controversially, determined that Kepa Arrizabalaga had fouled Joao Pedro.

The Chelsea loanee failed to rectify the situation from the ensuing penalty, as he guessed incorrectly, allowing Pedro to calmly slot the ball into the opposite corner.

Antoine Semenyo, one of Bournemouth's key players, had an opportunity to equalize shortly after the half-hour mark when he broke through Brighton's high defensive line, but he shot directly at the steadfast Bart Verbruggen.

Brighton then had their own chance to extend their lead, with Mitoma again missing the target as he volleyed against the post from a well-placed cross by Tariq Lamptey, leaving the score at a narrow 1-0 at the conclusion of an engaging first half at the Amex Stadium.

The Seagulls displayed resolute defense early in the second half, aiming to frustrate a Bournemouth team that had come into the match as the league's second-highest away scorers.

Despite the hosts' strong resistance, it took a remarkable effort from Justin Kluivert to level the match in the 61st minute. The Dutchman skillfully cut in from the left and unleashed a powerful shot that was beyond Verbruggen's reach.

This goal also marked Kluivert as the first Bournemouth player to achieve 10 away goals in a single top-flight season.

Regrettably for Kluivert, his moment of significance was overshadowed, as substitute Welbeck quickly reinstated Brighton's advantage just three minutes after entering the match, deftly directing the ball in off the far post following a pass from Georginio Rutter.

Welbeck's decisive goal ensured that Fabian Hurzeler's team secured all three points, elevating them to eighth place and tying them on points with seventh-placed Bournemouth.
