Britain and Spain make winning starts at United Cup as new season begins

Spain emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Brazil in the thrilling opening match of the revamped $10 million tournament, which showcases 18 countries. The tournament will also feature matches in Sydney, with the final scheduled for January 7th.
In the upcoming days, top-ranked players such as Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek will be in action as they prepare for the first Grand Slam of the year, taking place from January 14th to 28th in Melbourne.
Despite a dip in form during his Group C clash against Alex de Minaur, Cameron Norrie managed to overcome the challenge and secure a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 victory at the packed RAC Arena. This win ended his nine-match losing streak against opponents ranked within the top 20 in the world.
Katie Boulter sealed the victory for her team with a convincing 6-2, 6-4 win over Ajla Tomljanovic, who had been sidelined for most of the previous season due to a knee injury requiring surgery.
In the Group A tie between Spain and Brazil, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and his mixed doubles partner Sara Sorribes Tormo defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia and Marcelo Melo 6-4, 7-5 in the deciding match.
Davidovich Fokina, making his debut in the United Cup, gave Spain an early lead by defeating Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-4, 6-0 in the first match of the 2024 season. He showcased his dominance from the baseline and did not face a single break point throughout the contest.
However, Brazil fought back as Haddad Maia, ranked 11th in the world, defeated Sorribes Tormo 7-6, 6-2 in a rematch of their intense French Open fourth-round encounter earlier in the year.
Reflecting on their performance, Davidovich Fokina expressed his satisfaction with playing alongside Sorribes Tormo and emphasized their enjoyment on the court. He also highlighted their focus on continuous improvement rather than solely focusing on the result.
On Saturday, the Czech Republic will face China, while Poland will take on Brazil in Perth. In Sydney, the Netherlands will compete against Norway, and Italy will go head-to-head with Germany.
