Britain's Alex Yee runs perfect 10km to take men's triathlon gold

Briton Alex Yee, aged 26, executed a well-paced 10km run to secure a thrilling Olympic triathlon gold on Wednesday, surpassing a fading Hayden Wilde, also 26, of New Zealand in challenging conditions in Paris.

The event was initially scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed due to poor water quality in the River Seine. Following the swim and bike legs, a large group of 32 athletes transitioned to the run together.

Yee and Wilde quickly broke away from the pack. However, the New Zealander, who won bronze in Tokyo, surprisingly surged ahead early on. Yee, known as the fastest runner in the field and a silver medallist from three years ago, chose not to respond.

Initially appearing to be Wilde's victory, the intense pace and heat drained his energy. Yee, who clinched gold in the mixed relay in Tokyo, surged ahead with 400 meters remaining and crossed the finish line first.

Both athletes, who have been exchanging podium finishes for years, collapsed after finishing the race, with Wilde putting his arm around Yee.

"I genuinely believed the race was over for me, but I wanted to give myself one last opportunity and not give up," Yee stated.

Wilde acknowledged New Zealand's Dylan McCullough, who caught up during the bike stage to support his teammate and bring him into the leading group.

"He returned, waited, and closed that gap... he's the one who assisted me in securing the silver medal," Wilde informed the press.

Leo Bergere of France claimed the bronze in a successful day for the host country, following France's Cassandre Beaugrand's victory in the women's event.

Yee's triumph in Paris, marked by breaking the ribbon, further enhances an already illustrious career and reinforces Britain's supremacy in the Olympic individual triathlon, signifying the nation's 10th medal following Beth Potter's earlier bronze achievement.

Kristian Blummenfelt of Norway, aged 30 and the gold medalist from Tokyo, concluded the event in 12th place.

Sam Dickinson from Britain, who served as a domestique for Yee during the cycling segment, fell behind shortly after the run commenced, gesturing towards his teammate in the lead and urging the audience to support him.

Looking ahead, Dickinson will concentrate on the mixed team relay scheduled for Monday, where France is expected to be a formidable competitor, aiming to improve upon their bronze medal performance from Tokyo.
