Broncos match NFL record with gritty Christmas win over Chiefs

The Denver Broncos’ NFL season rolled on Christmas night as they edged past the Kansas City Chiefs 20–13, tying an NFL single-season record in the process and strengthening their push for the AFC’s top seed.

Denver improved to an NFL-best 13–3, with an astonishing 11 of those wins coming by one score, equalling the league record previously set by the 2022 Minnesota Vikings and, fittingly, the 2024 Chiefs themselves.

Even without playoff implications for Kansas City, the divisional clash delivered late drama, physical intensity, and yet another narrow escape for a Broncos team that has made winning tight games a defining trait of its season.

Close wins becoming Denver’s identity

The Broncos’ ability to grind out results has been unmatched across the league. Eleven of their 13 victories have been decided by eight points or fewer, underlining a team comfortable operating under pressure.

Last season, Kansas City followed a similar script, going 15–2 with 11 one-score wins before reaching the Super Bowl for a third straight year. At the time, critics questioned whether the Chiefs’ success was sustainable.

Now, Denver are proving that tight victories are not luck, but a sign of composure, execution, and belief.

A Changing of the Guard in the AFC West

Thursday night also highlighted a dramatic reversal of fortunes between the AFC West rivals. Kansas City, already eliminated from playoff contention and without Patrick Mahomes, who suffered an ACL injury in Week 15, battled valiantly but fell short yet again in a close contest.

With the loss, the Chiefs dropped to 1–8 in one-score games this season and fell to 6–10 overall, ensuring their first losing season in 13 years. For a franchise that has dominated the division for much of the past decade, the decline has been stark.

Denver, meanwhile, continue to rise.

Playoffs secured and History beckons

The Broncos are now locked into the postseason and will make back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since the Peyton Manning era in 2014 and 2015.

Led by second-year quarterback Bo Nix, Denver have combined efficiency on offense with situational discipline, doing just enough in decisive moments to outlast opponents week after week.

More importantly, the Broncos control their destiny. A victory in Week 18 against the Los Angeles Chargers would secure the AFC No. 1 seed, delivering home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

One Final Test Remains

The final hurdle, however, is far from straightforward.

Bo Nix has yet to beat the Chargers, holding an 0–3 record against Los Angeles. The Chargers swept Denver last season and stunned the Broncos earlier this year in Week 3, scoring 10 points in the final three minutes before sealing victory with a walk-off field goal.

Assuming Los Angeles defeats the Texans this weekend, Week 18 will become one of the most consequential regular-season games in the AFC, with seeding, momentum, and divisional pride all at stake.

Despite the challenge, confidence remains high in Denver’s camp.

After all, no team in the NFL has been better at surviving pressure-packed moments this season than the Broncos.

A team built for January

Whether Denver’s knack for winning close games translates into deep playoff success remains to be seen. But with history already matched, a division title within reach, and belief flowing through the locker room, the Broncos have firmly re-established themselves as a genuine AFC power.

Christmas night was simply the latest reminder: this Denver team refuses to blink.
