Brown named MVP of the NBA Finals as Celtics clinch historic title

Jaylen Brown, aged 27, was crowned the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player on Monday after leading the Boston Celtics to a resounding victory over the Dallas Mavericks, securing their 18th championship in franchise history.

Expressing his gratitude, Brown acknowledged the collective effort of his teammates and credited the Celtics' legendary figure, Bill Russell, for whom the Finals MVP trophy is named.

Throughout the five Finals games, the 27-year-old showcased his skills, averaging 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.0 assists. Notably, he also displayed an impressive defensive performance against Luka Doncic, the regular-season scoring leader for the Mavericks.

Brown emphasized the bond he shares with his teammates, particularly his partner in crime, Jayson Tatum, stating that they had supported each other throughout the journey.

The Celtics' victory marked their first championship since 2008. Despite falling short in the 2022 finals against the Golden State Warriors and facing disappointment in the previous season's Eastern Conference finals against the Miami Heat, the team remained determined this year.

The Celtics dominated the regular season, securing a league-leading 64 wins. They continued their success in the Eastern Conference finals, sweeping the Indiana Pacers, with Brown earning MVP honors in that series as well.

Although Brown signed a lucrative five-year, $286 million contract extension with the Celtics, it was Tatum who often received more recognition as the team's top star.

Despite being snubbed for All-NBA honors and not being selected for the US Olympic basketball team in Paris, Brown achieved his ultimate goal of winning an NBA title and was awarded the Finals MVP.

As the final seconds ticked off in the clinching victory of 106-88, Brown and Tatum shared a heartfelt embrace, symbolizing their journey together. Brown expressed his resilience, stating that he never allowed previous playoff disappointments to discourage him.

"I never hung my head," he affirmed.
