Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will miss the remainder of the NFL season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will be sidelined for the remainder of the NFL season following an MRI that revealed a ruptured right Achilles tendon, as announced by the team on Monday.

Watson sustained the injury during a loss to Cincinnati on Sunday and is scheduled to undergo surgery at a later date. The organization has indicated that he is expected to make a full recovery.

During the second quarter, while attempting to throw, Watson fell to his knees without any contact from defenders. He was subsequently carted off the field and did not return to the game.

Throughout the season, Watson completed 63.4% of his passes, accumulating 1,148 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions, in addition to rushing for one touchdown. However, he faced significant pressure, being sacked an NFL-high 33 times.

The Browns, currently holding a record of 1-6, have struggled offensively, failing to score 20 points in any game this season.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who serves as Watson's backup, sustained a finger injury and was replaced by Jameis Winston during the loss on Sunday. It remains uncertain who will take the starting position when the Browns face the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday.

Watson is in the third year of a five-year, $230 million contract he signed with the Browns after being traded from Houston in March 2022, a deal that included three first-round NFL Draft picks and two additional selections.

Watson did not play in the 2021 season due to allegations of sexual misconduct during massage sessions and was suspended for the first 11 games of the 2022 season, in addition to being fined $5 million for breaching the NFL's personal conduct policy.

In the injury-riddled 2023 season, he started only six games and underwent season-ending shoulder surgery last November.
