Although Alejandro Garnacho had an early strike ruled out for offside, Casemiro opened the scoring with a well-placed header from a Harry Maguire cross. Moments later, Dani Vivian was sent off for a last-man foul on Rasmus Højlund, and Bruno Fernandes calmly converted the resulting penalty.
Athletic’s hopes faded further just before halftime when Fernandes grabbed his second, capitalizing on persistent pressure from the Red Devils.

Despite second-half efforts from Mazraoui, Ugarte, and Casemiro, United were content to control possession and protect their lead. Julen Agirrezabala prevented further damage with several key saves, but the damage was already done.
This was Manchester United’s first victory inside 90 minutes in their last eight matches, while Athletic Club were handed just their second loss in 11 games—both coming against major European powers.
With the final also set to be played at San Mames, Athletic now face a monumental task in the return leg at Old Trafford.
