Buccaneers edge Panthers 16–14 to keep Playoff hopes alive

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers did their part on Saturday.

Now, all they can do is wait.

Tampa Bay kept its playoff hopes alive with a narrow 16–14 victory over the Carolina Panthers, improving to 8–9 on the season and ensuring the NFC South title race will go down to the final day. Despite the win, the Buccaneers’ postseason fate is no longer in their hands.

The division champion will be decided by Sunday’s matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints. If Atlanta wins, Carolina will emerge as NFC South champions via tiebreakers in a three-way tie. If the Saints win or the game ends in a draw, Tampa Bay will clinch the division and secure the NFC’s No. 4 seed.

Fast start sets the tone

The Buccaneers opened the game with urgency, striking first behind quarterback Baker Mayfield. A sharp early drive ended with Mayfield connecting for a touchdown, followed by Chase McLaughlin’s 29-yard field goal to give Tampa Bay a 10–0 lead.

Carolina responded after Mayfield threw an interception, which set up Bryce Young’s first touchdown pass of the afternoon. Young found tight end Tommy Tremble for an 8-yard score to pull the Panthers back into contention.

Still, Tampa Bay closed the first half on top. McLaughlin drilled another field goal late in the second quarter, sending the Buccaneers into halftime with a 13–7 advantage.

The third quarter passed without scoring, highlighted by a missed opportunity for Carolina when kicker Ryan Fitzgerald came up short on a 54-yard field-goal attempt.

Early in the fourth quarter, McLaughlin struck again, extending Tampa Bay’s lead to 16–7. Carolina then appeared poised to respond after driving to the Buccaneers’ 20-yard line, but a bizarre flea-flicker attempt derailed their momentum.

Running back Rico Dowdle slipped on the wet turf while attempting the backward pitch, fumbling the ball in the process. Veteran linebacker Lavonte David recovered the loose ball, wiping out a prime scoring chance for the Panthers.

Carolina refused to go quietly. Young converted a critical fourth-down throw to Tetairoa McMillan before finding Jalen Coker for a touchdown that cut the deficit to two points.

But the Buccaneers’ offense delivered when it mattered most. Facing third-and-4, Mayfield connected with tight end Cade Otton for a crucial 20-yard gain that allowed Tampa Bay to bleed the clock.

The Panthers got the ball back with just 18 seconds remaining and no timeouts. A last-ditch pitch play failed, sealing the Buccaneers’ victory.

Playoff picture remains unclear

Despite the loss, Carolina can still win the NFC South if the Falcons defeat the Saints on Sunday. A New Orleans win or tie, however, would hand Tampa Bay the division crown.

Tampa Bay finished with 21 first downs, 338 total yards, and converted 8 of 15 third downs. Carolina managed 16 first downs, 285 yards, and struggled mightily on third down, converting just once in eight attempts.

The Panthers’ rushing attack was virtually nonexistent. Dowdle and Chuba Hubbard combined for just 20 rushing yards, putting the offensive burden squarely on Young.

Individual Performances

Young completed 24 of 35 passes for 266 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. McMillan led Carolina receivers with four catches for 85 yards.

For Tampa Bay, Mayfield went 16 of 22 for 203 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Otton starred with seven catches for 94 yards and a touchdown, while rookie running back Bucky Irving carried the load on the ground with 85 yards on 26 attempts.

Now, the Buccaneers wait, knowing their playoff fate will be decided without them taking the field.
