Bucks defeat Heat 131-124, advance to In-Season Tournament quarter-finals

In a high-stakes showdown, the Milwaukee Bucks showcased an almost flawless performance securing their spot in the In-Season Tournament quarterfinals. Giannis Antetokounmpo's 33 points, complemented by Damian Lillard's 32, orchestrated a fourth-quarter comeback propelling the Bucks to a thrilling 131-124 victory over the Miami Heat on Tuesday night. This win not only solidified their place in the quarterfinals but also guaranteed them a home game in the NBA's inaugural in-season tournament.

Lillard emphasized their team's knack for clinching victories, stating, “The one thing that we do have going for us is we know how to win the game. We know how to do the things to win a game.”

The game's climax was marked by the Bucks' closure, a gripping 16-6 run where they displayed remarkable precision, shooting 5 for 6 from the field and a perfect 5 for 5 from the free-throw line. Khris Middleton contributed 17 points, supported by Malik Beasley with 16 and Brook Lopez with 12 for the Bucks, who dominated East Group B, culminating with a pristine 4-0 record.

Their upcoming clash is set against the wild-card entry, New York, slated for next Tuesday, while Boston, the winner of East Group C, heads to face Group A winner Indiana in the other quarterfinal before the highly anticipated Final Four showdown in Las Vegas.

Coach Adrian Griffin remains focused, urging the team to channel their energies towards the upcoming games against the Bulls and Atlanta before the pivotal quarterfinal fixture against the Knicks.

Bam Adebayo spearheaded the Heat's offense with an impressive 31 points, receiving support from Kyle Lowry's 21 and Josh Richardson's 20. Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Caleb Martin added 14 points each, while Duncan Robinson contributed 13 for the Heat.

Despite a valiant effort, Miami played shorthanded, missing key players Jimmy Butler (ankle) and Haywood Highsmith (back). Butler's absence was particularly notable, given his spectacular performance in Miami's playoff ousting of Milwaukee last season, where he averaged a staggering 37.6 points per game.

The Bucks encountered their own setback, losing Pat Connaughton to a sprained right ankle late in the second quarter.

Lowry momentarily shifted the momentum in Miami's favor with a crucial 3-pointer, placing the Heat ahead 118-115 with 3:25 remaining. However, the Bucks responded fiercely, concluding the game on a decisive 16-6 run. Lillard's clutch free throws in the final minute secured the victory, aided by a foul against Richardson and a technical assessed to Spoelstra.

The game opened with a sluggish start for the Heat, missing 10 of their first 11 shots and falling behind 15-2. This poor start marked the third-worst shooting stretch over the first 5 1/2 minutes of a game this season.

Despite the initial setback, Miami rallied impressively, boasting two separate 7-for-8 shooting streaks later in the half. A powerful 40-point second quarter propelled them to enter halftime with a narrow 62-59 lead, showcasing their resilience after the early deficit.

Although Miami had opportunities to seize control, including a five-point lead in the second half, Milwaukee showcased their resilience, rallying back for the victory.

Miami, entering the night with aspirations to top their group or secure a wild-card spot, acknowledged the added intensity brought by the In-Season Tournament. Adebayo remarked, “The In-Season Tournament does give the fans something to get riled up about.”

Upcoming games for the teams:

  • Milwaukee: Visit Chicago on Thursday.
  • Miami: Host Indiana on Thursday and again on Saturday.
