Mauritania's unexpected performance against Burkina Faso in their third-ever participation in the tournament surprised many. Despite being considered underdogs, they held their ground for a significant period of time.
Burkina Faso's forwards, Cedric Badolo and Mohamed Konate, posed a threat to Mauritania midway through the first half. However, their chances were unable to test goalkeeper Babacar Niasse.
Mauritania came close to taking the lead when Aboubakary Koita surprised Burkina Faso's goalkeeper, Herve Koffi, with a free-kick. Unfortunately, Koffi produced an exceptional save, denying Mauritania the lead for the first time in an AFCON match.
Despite this, Mauritania's coach, Amir Abdou, can take pride in his team's first-half performance. They successfully prevented Burkina Faso from scoring before the break, something that hadn't been achieved in six previous AFCON group encounters.
In the second half, Burkina Faso increased their efforts to secure all three points. However, Mauritania handled their attacks comfortably as the final 30 minutes approached.
Mauritania made attacking changes, indicating a change in tempo. Substitute Amar Sidi Bouna's powerful long-range shot forced Koffi into making a brilliant save, denying Mauritania a second goal at the AFCON finals.
Burkina Faso responded, with Niasse making an impressive one-handed save to keep out Traore's shot. However, it was all in vain as Issa Kabore won a penalty in stoppage time after being fouled by Nouh El Abd.
After a VAR review, Traore successfully converted the penalty, extending Burkina Faso's scoring streak to 15 consecutive AFCON games.
Despite Hubert Velud's team being unbeaten in their last five head-to-head matches, their opponents are still searching for their first victory in the tournament.
