Burnley 1-4 Newcastle: Magpies run riot to leave Clarets on the brink of relegation

Newcastle United bolstered their aspirations of finishing in the top seven by securing a dominant 4-1 victory against Burnley, who have suffered defeat in their last six Premier League encounters against them.

Burnley started the game with great determination, motivated by the knowledge that they could have avoided being in the bottom three. They made a strong start at Turf Moor and were unlucky not to score an early goal when Jacob Bruun Larsen made a clever run and forced a good save from Martin Dúbravka.

However, despite their early efforts, Burnley were undone in a very simple manner. Newcastle took the lead with their first meaningful attack of the game, as Callum Wilson tapped in from close range after Arijanet Muric saved Alexander Isak's initial shot.

Burnley's response to falling behind was lackluster at best, and it was actually Newcastle who looked more likely to extend their lead.

And indeed, they did just that ten minutes before half-time. Callum Wilson battled hard with Maxime Estève on the byline and cut the ball back for Sean Longstaff, who rushed in to score into the bottom corner.

The Magpies, determined to secure European football, continued to press for a third goal. They received a helping hand from Lorenz Assignon, who lost the ball in his own half, allowing Anthony Gordon to set up Bruno Guimarães for a third goal just before half-time.

Things could have gotten even worse for Burnley shortly after the restart when Josh Brownhill fouled Gordon in the penalty area. However, Muric provided his team with a temporary reprieve by becoming the first Premier League goalkeeper to save an Isak penalty.

But it didn't take long for Isak to have the last laugh. He collected Jacob Murphy's cross at the back post and lifted the ball into the net, extending Newcastle's lead.

Following the fourth goal, a large number of spectators left Turf Moor, but those who remained almost saw a small consolation when Sander Berge's powerful shot from a distance narrowly missed the goal post.

Eddie Howe's team somewhat responded to Burnley's plea for mercy after the fourth goal, as a series of substitutions disrupted the flow of the game - a situation that favored the stunned hosts, who managed to score a consolation goal through Dara O'Shea.

Nottingham Forest's victory over Sheffield United only added to Burnley's despair, as today's outcomes place them five points behind in the relegation zone with just two matches left. On the other hand, Newcastle is in a much better position to secure a top seven finish.
