Senegal to challenge AFCON title revocation as CAF Awards Morocco controversial 3-0 victory

The fallout from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final has escalated into a full-blown legal battle, with Senegal confirming plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after being stripped of their title in a stunning ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

CAF’s Appeals Committee ruled that Senegal forfeited the final against Morocco, awarding the hosts a 3-0 victory. The decision has triggered widespread debate across the football world, raising fresh questions about governance, officiating, and the application of competition rules in African football.

Why CAF overturned the result

At the heart of the controversy is a dramatic sequence late in the final played in Rabat. With the match level at 0-0 deep into stoppage time, Moroccan forward Brahim Díaz was awarded a penalty following a VAR review.

The decision sparked immediate protests from Senegal’s players and coaching staff, led by head coach Pape Thiaw. Several players temporarily left the pitch in protest, halting the match for approximately 15–20 minutes.

According to CAF regulations, specifically Articles 82 and 84, any team that refuses to continue play or leaves the field without referee authorization can be deemed to have forfeited the match. CAF applied these rules retroactively after reviewing Morocco’s appeal.

What happened after the walk-off

Despite the disruption, Senegal eventually returned to the pitch after intervention from captain Sadio Mané. The penalty was taken but missed, with goalkeeper Edouard Mendy comfortably saving Díaz’s attempted Panenka.

The match continued into extra time, where Pape Gueye scored what was initially celebrated as the winning goal, securing a 1-0 victory for Senegal.

For weeks, that result stood. However, Morocco’s formal appeal prompted CAF to reassess the incident, ultimately leading to the unprecedented reversal.

Senegal’s strong response

Senegal’s Football Federation has reacted with outrage, describing the ruling as baseless and damaging to the integrity of African football. Secretary General Abdoulaye Seydou Sow labelled the decision “a travesty” and insisted the federation would pursue justice at the highest level.

In an official statement, the federation condemned the verdict as unjust, unprecedented and harmful to African football’s credibility. Senegal’s legal team is now preparing to file an appeal with CAS in Lausanne, where a final and binding decision will be made.

Morocco’s Position: Rules over emotion

Morocco’s football federation has taken a more measured stance, emphasizing that their appeal was grounded strictly in regulatory compliance. According to their statement, the intention was never to dispute Senegal’s on-field performance, but rather to ensure that competition rules were properly enforced.

They reaffirmed their commitment to:

  • Regulatory clarity
  • Fair competition structures
  • Stability in African tournaments

Chaos, Crowd Trouble, and Wider Fallout

The controversy wasn’t limited to the pitch. Reports from the final also highlighted attempted pitch invasions by sections of the crowd and heightened tensions throughout stoppage time.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who was in attendance, criticized the conduct during the match, calling the scenes “unacceptable” and reiterating the importance of discipline in football.

CAF had initially imposed heavy fines and sanctions on both federations, including bans and financial penalties exceeding $1 million combined. However, those measures did not initially affect the match result, making the later reversal even more contentious.

Players react as debate intensifies

Several Senegalese players have expressed their frustration publicly. Defender Moussa Niakhaté posted an image celebrating the original victory with a caption suggesting disbelief at CAF’s decision.

The ruling has divided opinion among fans and analysts, some argue CAF correctly enforced the rules, others believe the punishment is disproportionate to the incident and many question why the decision came weeks after the final whistle.

What happens next?

All eyes now turn to CAS, where Senegal will attempt to overturn the ruling. The case could set a major precedent for how match disruptions and disciplinary breaches are handled in international football.

If CAS rules in Senegal’s favour, the title could be reinstated. If not, Morocco’s administrative victory will stand as one of the most controversial in AFCON history.

Either way, the incident has already left a lasting mark on African football, raising serious questions about consistency, fairness, and the balance between rules and the spirit of the game.
