Canada beat Great Britain to reach Davis Cup quarter-finals, Netherlands progress

Canada secured its place in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup for the third consecutive year with a victory over Britain on Sunday, while the Netherlands progressed despite a close loss to the defending champions, Italy.
In Manchester, Canada required just one match win to eliminate the hosts and finish at the top of Group D. Denis Shapovalov accomplished this swiftly, defeating Dan Evans with a score of 6-0, 7-5, and celebrated by enjoying ice cream on the court.
"It was certainly challenging to compete against so many British supporters," remarked Shapovalov, who maintained his composure in front of a fervent crowd of approximately 15,000 spectators.
"I have faced similar situations before. I focused on staying in my own zone and maintaining my lead, as I sensed Dan gaining momentum and the crowd becoming more energized.
"It was beginning to shift, so I am very pleased to have secured the victory in straight sets."
Felix Auger-Aliassime extended the 2022 champions' lead to an unassailable 2-0 by overcoming British number one Jack Draper in a tightly contested match, finishing 7-6(8), 7-5.
Britain managed to provide the crowd with a moment of joy as Henry Patten and Neal Skupski triumphed over Gabriel Diallo and Alexis Galarneau with a score of 7-5, 6-4.
The knockout stage of the Final 8 will take place in Malaga from November 19 to November 24, with a draw scheduled for this week to determine the matchups.
Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Australia, the United States, Germany, Canada, and Argentina have all qualified for this stage.
With world number one Jannik Sinner observing in Bologna, Italy established a 2-0 lead against the Netherlands to top Group A, following Matteo Berrettini's victory over Botic van de Zandschulp (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) and Flavio Cobolli's win against Tallon Griekspoor (7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3).
The Dutch maintained their optimism and secured the position of runners-up as Wesley Koolhof and Van de Zandschulp triumphed over Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori with a score of 7-6(6) 7-5 in the doubles match.
Spain opted to rest their world number three, Carlos Alcaraz, for their match against Australia but still managed to achieve a hard-fought 2-1 victory, thereby leading Group B in Valencia. Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martinez staged a comeback to defeat Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell with scores of 5-7 6-4 6-4.
Pablo Carreno Busta initially put Spain ahead by winning against Jordan Thompson with a score of 2-6 6-2 7-6(3), but Alexei Popyrin leveled the match by defeating Martinez 6-4 6-4, bringing last year's runners-up back into contention.
Earlier, Chile concluded their campaign on a high note in Zhuhai, securing a 2-1 victory over Slovakia to finish third in Group C, although both teams were already eliminated from further competition.
