Canada Defeats USA 2-1 to Secure Nations League Bronze as Jonathan David Shines

Canada edged past the United States 2-1 in the third-place match of the 2025 CONCACAF Nations League, thanks to a decisive strike from Jonathan David. The victory at a sparsely filled SoFi Stadium marked back-to-back competitive defeats for the US under newly appointed head coach Mauricio Pochettino, raising concerns ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Sluggish USA Falters Again Under Pochettino

Still reeling from their 1-0 semi-final loss to Panama, the United States produced another lackluster first-half display, showing little of the urgency Pochettino had demanded. The former Tottenham, PSG, and Chelsea boss expressed disappointment but reassured fans that time remains to fix issues before next year’s World Cup.

“If we are in this situation one year from now, then yes—Houston, we have a problem. S.O.S.,” Pochettino quipped.

With SoFi Stadium barely one-quarter full, the low-energy crowd mirrored the teams' early struggles, as neither registered a single shot on target until Ismaël Koné’s deflected effort in the 22nd minute.

Five minutes later, poor US defending allowed Canada to break the deadlock. Ali Ahmed whipped in a low cross that found Jonathan David inside the box. The Lille forward’s deflected shot landed in the path of Nigeria-born striker Tani Oluwaseyi, who coolly slotted home to give Canada a 1-0 lead.

Agyemang Equalizes, but Canada Responds in the Second Half

The United States, initially rattled, found a response in the 35th minute. Tim Weah cut in from the left flank and found Diego Luna inside the box. The Real Salt Lake winger cleverly laid off the ball to an unmarked Patrick Agyemang, who smashed in the equalizer.

Despite the goal, momentum stayed with Canada, who emerged from halftime with renewed intensity. David, the game’s standout player, was at the heart of the action:

  • 50' – David fell under a Tyler Adams challenge inside the penalty box, but no penalty was given.
  • 52' – Oluwaseyi squandered a golden opportunity, failing to capitalize on a careless back-pass from Adams.
  • 54' – David, through on goal, was shoved by US defender Max Arfsten, but the referee waved play on, leading to Canada coach Jesse Marsch’s furious protests.

Marsch’s outburst led to a red card, but just minutes later, Canada found the breakthrough they deserved.

David’s Winner Seals Canada’s Victory

In the 59th minute, Canada struck the decisive blow. Tajon Buchanan and Ahmed combined brilliantly before setting up David, who rifled a shot past US goalkeeper Matt Turner, restoring Canada’s 2-1 lead.

With the United States unable to respond, Canada celebrated a statement victory, proving their readiness to compete with North America's elite ahead of the World Cup.

Assistant coach Mauro Biello, standing in after Marsch’s ejection, praised the squad’s resilience:

“We came into this tournament to win. That didn’t happen, but today was another big test against a very good American team. It shows we’re ready to compete and beat anyone in this region.”

What’s Next?

With Canada securing third place, attention now shifts to the Nations League final, where Mexico and Panama will battle for the title. Meanwhile, Pochettino faces mounting pressure to fix the USMNT’s struggles before their 2026 World Cup campaign on home soil.
