Canada dominates Netherlands 3-0 in Volleyball Nations League as Ketrzynski shines

The battle to avoid relegation in the Volleyball Nations League 2025 reached a boiling point in Ljubljana on Friday, and it was Team Canada who rose to the occasion with a dominant 3-0 sweep over the Netherlands, tightening the noose on the Dutch team’s hopes of remaining in the VNL for the 2026 season.

With tensions high at Arena Stožice, Canada delivered a performance worthy of survival, overpowering the Netherlands with set scores of 25-22, 25-20, and 25-15. The result leaves the Dutch national team with just one win in 11 matches, placing them in 18th place, the bottom of the VNL standings 2025, and making their survival now dependent not only on their own performance but also on results from other struggling sides.

VNL 2025: Canada Rise, Dutch Collapse

Friday’s fixture was always going to be pivotal. With relegation pressure mounting, Canada entered the match knowing a victory would lift them further out of the red zone, while the Netherlands desperately needed points to climb out of last place. Unfortunately for the Dutch, their resistance only lasted a single set before they were systematically dismantled by a Canadian squad brimming with urgency and intent.

Brodie Hofer, Canada’s outside hitter, pierced through the Dutch block time and again, setting the tone for a match that steadily slipped out of the Netherlands' grasp. Hofer was just one piece of a well-oiled Canadian attack led by Xander Ketrzynski, who top-scored with 16 points (15 kills, one block). The relentless offensive rhythm was further sustained by Isaac Heslinga with 12 points, while team captain Fynn McCarthy contributed a balanced stat line of 10 points (7 kills, 2 aces, 1 block) from the middle.

“We came out and played our best ball,” McCarthy said post-match. “This was a must-win game, and I’m proud of how everyone stepped up.”

Dutch Despair: Relegation scenario looks grim

With just one win and five points, the Netherlands must now face world champions Italy on Sunday in what will be their final Preliminary Phase match. Even a stunning upset victory might not be enough. The team now relies on the outcomes of two other teams, China (2 wins, 7 points) and Serbia (2 wins, 6 points), to keep their faint survival hopes alive.

Dutch captain Wessel Keemink offered a blunt assessment:

We came up short today. We were competitive for one set, but that was it. Fighting isn’t always enough.”

Only Michiel Ahyi, with 14 points, reached double-digit scoring for the Dutch team, whose errors and lack of cohesion made their situation worse with every passing set.

Relegation Watch: Serbia Strike, China Falter

Earlier on Friday, Serbia strengthened their fight for survival with a clinical 3-0 win over Ukraine (25-22, 25-19, 25-17), a result that adds more complexity to the VNL relegation battle. Serbia will next face Canada on Saturday—a clash now brimming with do-or-die implications for both sides.

Meanwhile in Gdańsk, China missed a golden opportunity to guarantee safety, falling in straight sets to a resurgent Bulgaria (25-23, 25-16, 26-24). China, though already qualified for the VNL Finals 2025 as hosts, could still face relegation if results go against them and they fail to beat Cuba on Sunday.

Bulgaria’s rising star Aleksandar Nikolov starred once again, notching a match-high 21 points, while Aleks Grozdanovadded 11 more from the middle. The victory keeps Bulgaria in the mix for the VNL 2025 Finals, now sitting 11th in the standings with five wins and 15 points.

What’s Next in the VNL 2025?

The final matches of the Volleyball Nations League 2025 Preliminary Phase will determine which teams progress to the Finals and which nations face the drop. Saturday’s matchups feature:

  • Serbia vs Canada – A high-stakes survival battle
  • Slovenia vs Italy – An opportunity for the hosts to climb
  • Bulgaria vs Poland, and Iran vs France – Crucial fixtures for Finals qualification
