Canada's Summer McIntosh wins women's 200 meters butterfly gold

Just three days following her commanding victory in the 400m individual medley, McIntosh showcased another impressive swim, radiating youthful enthusiasm as she touched the wall first in an Olympic record time of 2 minutes and 3.03 seconds.
American swimmer Regan Smith earned the silver medal for the second consecutive Olympic Games, while China's Zhang Yufei claimed the bronze.
With this victory, McIntosh has made history as the first Canadian swimmer to win multiple Olympic gold medals. The significance of the moment was heightened as it occurred in her mother's signature event.
Jill Horstead, McIntosh's mother, was also a competitive swimmer and represented Canada at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
"It feels amazing to win the 200 fly tonight, especially since it was her primary event," McIntosh remarked. "Sharing this achievement with her is truly special. I know she is incredibly proud of me, along with the rest of my family."
McIntosh still has the 200 individual medley and relays ahead of her, offering the possibility of increasing her medal count, which currently stands at a silver in the 400m freestyle from the opening night.
As the Canadian swimmer gains popularity as one of the standout athletes in the Paris pool, Zhang is also attracting attention before races, albeit for different reasons.
The first final of the evening was filled with a mix of anticipation and concern, particularly for the Chinese swim team and their "Butterfly Queen" Zhang, who once again found herself in the spotlight due to doping allegations.
China has been embroiled in a doping controversy since reports from the New York Times and German broadcaster ARD revealed that 23 Chinese swimmers had tested positive for a banned heart medication prior to the Tokyo Games yet were still allowed to compete.
Zhang was one of the swimmers implicated in the reports but went on to claim victory in the 200m butterfly event in Tokyo.
While the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has refrained from disclosing the names of the swimmers involved, the issue continues to cast a shadow over the sport.
McIntosh's swim was so remarkable that the conversation about doping was effectively silenced, despite later questioning of the Chinese bronze medal-winning 4x200m freestyle relay team regarding positive tests.
Yang Junxuan, who swam the first leg, stated, "We will demonstrate through our own abilities that our results are completely clear and there is absolutely no issue."
"Our Chinese swimmers have undergone the most tests globally, and we have been cooperating diligently because we trust that a fair outcome will be reached."
During the butterfly event, Zhang took an early lead with McIntosh close behind for the first 100 meters before the Canadian accelerated and left the Chinese swimmers behind.
As Zhang fell behind, Smith attempted to catch up but was unable to surpass McIntosh.
