Canelo Alvarez to defend super middleweight crowns against Edgar Berlanga

Alvarez is set to continue the tradition of fighting on the Mexican Independence Day weekend, with a fight card that will also feature World Boxing Association middleweight champion Erislandy Lara defending his title against American Danny Garcia, a former welterweight and light welterweight champion.

With a record of 61-2-2 and 39 knockouts, Alvarez will put his WBA, WBC, and WBO titles on the line against the top-rated WBA contender in the 168-pound division.

Berlanga, an American of Puerto Rican descent, boasts a record of 22-0 with 17 knockouts. He is coming off a sixth-round stoppage victory over Ireland's Padraig McCrory in February, making this his first world title bout.

Expressing his excitement for the fight, Alvarez stated, "I'm thrilled for this Mexico vs. Puerto Rico showdown. It's an honor to be part of this legacy and facing an opponent like Edgar Berlanga only adds more excitement and significance to this event."

Berlanga, on the other hand, sees this as the opportunity of a lifetime, saying, "I belong here, and I will surprise the world and silence the critics by delivering a spectacular performance and knocking out Canelo Alvarez."

Cuban-born Lara, with a record of 30-3-3 and 18 knockouts, defended his WBA crown by stopping Australian Michael Zerafa in the second round in March.

Looking ahead to his fight with Garcia, Lara commented, "My bout with Danny Garcia will be a classic showdown between two legendary fighters of our time."

Garcia, a former world champion at 140 and 147 pounds, with a record of 37-3 and 21 knockouts, is stepping up to 160 to challenge Lara for his title. Garcia sees this as an opportunity to win a championship in his third weight class, stating, "Lara is a formidable champion, but I have the experience and skills to come out on top."
