Cape Verde 3-0 Mozambique: Cape Verde secure place in AFCON knockout stages with win over Mozambique

Cape Verde convincingly defeated Mozambique 3-0, securing their spot in the knockout stages of AFCON. However, Chiquinho Conde's team, despite enduring a winless streak of 14 consecutive games in the tournament, still has a chance to progress further.

Cape Verde got off to a strong start in their match against Ghana, and their momentum continued as they faced Mozambique. In the early stages of the game, Mozambique goalkeeper Ernani had to make a diving save to deny Deroy Duarte's powerful shot.

Bebe, Cape Verde's player, also posed a threat with a free kick from a distance, causing the bar to shake. However, he outdid himself shortly after the half-hour mark. Despite being far from the goal, Bebe's shot had incredible dip and swerve. Unfortunately for Ernani, the goalkeeper, he could have done better as he parried the ball into his own net, giving Cape Verde a 1-0 lead.

Although Mozambique had limited attacking opportunities, they thought they had a chance to equalize from a penalty just before halftime. However, after a VAR intervention, the decision was overturned.

Cape Verde quickly extinguished any hopes of a comeback in the second half. Edmilson Dove lost possession of the ball near his own area, allowing Ryan Mendes to calmly beat Ernani and extend Cape Verde's lead to 2-0.

Geny Catamo came close to scoring with a free kick, but it hit the top of the bar and went out of play.

With just over 20 minutes remaining, Ryan Mendes secured Cape Verde's victory by scoring his second goal. His powerful shot from 30 yards out found the top corner of the net, leaving Ernani with no chance to save it. This goal gave Cape Verde an insurmountable lead of 3-0.

With two wins in their group matches, Cape Verde has already secured the top spot. However, despite being at the bottom of the group, Mozambique still has a chance to advance if they win their final game and today's opponents, Egypt, avoid defeat.
