Carlos Alcaraz advances to Australian Open fourth round after holding off Nuno Borges Challenge

Carlos Alcaraz, aged 21, encountered a set loss before advancing to the last 16 of the Australian Open on Friday, moving closer to the historic achievement of becoming the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam.

The Spanish third seed showcased his superior skills against Nuno Borges, the Portuguese world number 33, who was eliminated from the tournament with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2 on Rod Laver Arena.

This match marked Alcaraz's debut on the center court this year, having previously played his first two matches on the adjacent Margaret Court Arena.

Under the bright sun, he thrived in the vibrant atmosphere, delivering an impressive performance with 54 winners and nine aces, asserting his dominance from the baseline.

"The last time I played here, I lost, so I was eager to return and secure another victory on Rod Laver," remarked the Spaniard, a four-time Grand Slam champion who is pursuing his first title in Australia.

"It is a privilege to experience the support here in Australia. I am striving to play a different style of tennis, which brings me joy and makes me smile on the court.

"My aim is also to entertain the audience and bring them happiness."

Alcaraz is set to face either British player Jack Draper or Australia's Aleksandar Vukic in his next match.

He is on a quest to become the youngest man to achieve a career Grand Slam—winning all four major tournaments—during the Open Era.

His fellow countryman, Rafael Nadal, accomplished this feat in 2010 at the age of 24.

If successful, Alcaraz will also set a new record as the youngest champion at Melbourne Park since Novak Djokovic in 2008.

To realize this ambition, he will likely need to overcome the Serbian star, whom he is projected to meet in a highly anticipated quarter-final.

Alcaraz commenced his match against Borges with remarkable intensity, securing an early break as the Portuguese player faltered with a backhand error under pressure.

Borges, who claimed his first ATP title last season by defeating the now-retired Nadal, struggled to respond to Alcaraz's formidable groundstrokes and faced another break in the seventh game, ultimately losing the set.

The 27-year-old persevered in the second set, reaching a 4-4 tie before Alcaraz unleashed a powerful forehand winner to secure the break. He then served out the set, concluding with his fifth ace of the match to establish a two-set advantage.

In the third set, Borges found himself on the defensive, successfully fending off two break points from Alcaraz during a gripping 16-point seventh game to maintain his serve.

However, he refused to capitulate, and the set progressed to a tiebreak, where he surprised the world number three with a decisive victory.

Alcaraz, visibly agitated, opened the fourth set by holding serve to love, then executed a stunning forehand winner to achieve a break and raced towards victory.
